Kundapur: Flow of saline water forces farmers to abandon agriculture

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundpaur, Mar 4: Even though the unending flow of saline water has been robbing them of their livelihood, the people of Kody say that the local administration has failed to take any remedial steps.

During the high tide, the saline water flows as a backwater. As water suddenly flows into fields, houses, plantations etc unexpectedly, the situation has become worrisome. As the problem persists, many have stopped raising crops. Because of saline water, the standing coconut trees have not been yielding any produce, and paddy fields wear a deserted look.

The saline water can be blocked if a protective wall is built at a small investment. If the drinking water project at Kody of which tank construction is complete, is executed, the people will get access to clean water. Currently, they have to go far to fetch drinking water. The standing saline water has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Various teams of officials and people's representatives have visited the area after receiving petitions. It was assured that the minor irrigation department would approve a plan, but nothing has happened. The new administration of the town municipality, the people hope, will do something for them this year.
