Bantwal, Mar 13: Former president of Dakshina Kannada district panchayat, veteran Congress leader Barangare Sadananda Poonja(80) passed away at a private hospital in Mangaluru on March 13 after a brief illness. He has left behind his wife, two sons, a daughter and a large number of friends and well-wishers.

He served as Dakshina Kannada district panchayat president in the year 2000 and president of Sajipamooda Mandala panchayat and gram panchayat president for a long time. He was also taluk board vice president, state environment control board member, instrumental in the progress of various temples and schools in Sajipamooda grama, founder president of Subhashnagar Sharadotsava committee and Subhash Yuvaka Mandala and administrator of Sajipamagane besides serving as district Congress president.

He indulged in political and social activities for a long time and was instrumental for the success of Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held at Bantwal. He had hoisted the nation’s flag locally during independence days for more than 50 years. He was close to Congress party leaders at the state level. Several elite people have expressed their condolences on his demise.
