Mangalore: Gregory Patrao Says MRPL Claiming Rs 600 Crore Loss to Hide Corruption

Mangalore, Jul 21: “The Rs 600 crore loss which Mangalore Refinery and Petroleum Limited (MRPL) is claiming to have suffered, is a trap to take away land easily from the farmer as he is the only obstacle to their projects”, said Gregory Patrao in a press meet held at Hotel Woodlands here on Wednesday July 21.

He claimed that corruption might be rampant and the massive loss claimed by the company might be a result of this which and the officials might be seeking to shift the blame on to the farmers.

Patrao alleged that this would help the MRPL officials to take away his land easily by claiming that they have occupied his land to compensate the loss caused by him to the company.

He added that such tricks wouldn’t help the company in any way as he is equipped with valid documents for every thing and entities like Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), Karnataka Industrial Areas Developmental Board (KIADB), and MRPL are working on projects without valid documentation and permission from the court which is unconstitutional.

KIADB had acquired Patrao’s land without permission and handed it over to MSEZ on April 24, 2007, and now the land acquisition documents have been handed over to MRPL.

Patrao also said that the company is not concerned with development and that his family had given 5.54 acres of land in the past for the Konkan Railway project and various projects of MRPL.

He added that he doesn’t want to sacrifice all the land to the company as they have no proper planning and land occupied by MRPL was given to ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (OMPL)-450 acres, BASF-250 acres, and Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL)-82.62 acres.

Patrao said that that the loss claimed by the company should be publicly discussed and the central vigilance commission should investigate to identify corrupt officials.

Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi vice-president Hemalatha Bhat said that the company should redesign the project as this would spare Patrao’s land. She added that the green belt is not yet properly laid and this should be taken care of by the companies rather then trying tricks to acquire Patrao’s land.

It is better to start agitation once again as it looks to be fooling the farmers by the bureaucrats, politicians and the real estates agents. The real estate people are minting the money in the name of multinational companies. I urge the concerned authorities to look in to the subject truthfully without grabbing farmers land and Mr. Gregory Patrao must receive justice

As one, Indians fought for independence from foreign rule and succeeded at a cost none of us can imagine. We are forgetting the valuable lessons handed down to us from the invasion/independence saga. History is repeating itself .. the similarities are glaringly clear. We are opening our doors to every element in the form of industrialization and development. Our farmers are cheated off their highly fertile lands. Please do not feel too proud that large business concerns have focused on Mangalore for their ventures. Already a common man is feeling the effect in the form of price hike, atmospheric change, pollution on ground and air, eg. The farms effected due to the flow of waste from UPCL plant of Udipi.

Let us not be too eager to welcome in our midst these unscrupulous businesses and the other elements that come along with them. I hope we do not live to regret all these extreme changes. Farmers and the upkeep of farms should have our complete support.

It is very sad that govt acquire lands in the name of development. once acquired from the farmer at cheap rate, then after few years sell / transfer the same land to the POWERFUL PEOPLE again at cheap rate (with taking bribe). Please see what happend to MCF, few years back acquired from farmers aat though away rate and now who is the owners of MCF. days are very short Mallya bab will convert that land into his own needs !! I have a question to govt / MRPL here, if they really need to compensate Patro, can they offer thier own indidual land/house to Patrao ? is any officers or politician can offer him ? it is very easy to acquire others land/house in the name of development / industrialisaton / urbanasation / employment / power supply etc... See what happend in Nandikoor, acquired land from farmes and now flooding, salt water into fertile fields, damage coastal lifeline NH road, pollution...

I have full sympathy for Mr.Patrao as he has magnanimously handed over / lost his fertile lands for various Government projects. I too share his anguish for misuse of his land by corrput people and politicians. He should be fully compensated in addition to providing him land of simialr quality else where of his choice by MRPL/ONGC.
However, i feel we need industrialisation for development of our country, which provides employment to locals, taxes to Government etc, though polluting industries has its own drawbacks. Whether Mr.Patrao agrees or not ONGC being a Government entity would acquire his land now or later on thier own terms. This has happened during forceible acquisiton of land for konkan route in Karwar and in GOA. Land is a scarce commodity, Government should have thought before granting permission to pollutiining industries.

    Hi Arun

I doubt anybody is against industrialization. But industrialization in Mangalore and that too in ones farmyard is something that disturbs one and all.

Dont think that gulf region is advanced to a height just because of industrialization. Industrialization is an evolution from the civilization.

If you have ever made a trip to Egypt, I am sure you would have only travelled vertically in the land along with the Nile. Civilization of the world began in the sand and took such a zenith in the place where Nile was only emerging. The Nile ends somewhere downward and outward of Egypt and is much fertile there than in Egypt. But the civilization started and remained intact.

The same goes to Indus civilization. People migrated to the riverside of Ganges, Indus, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, ... Then there started a farming/vegetation in need of survival and contentment. Roads, industries are made to make things easy and faster. It does not mean - that industries that process fossil fuel etc need to be at the centre point of civilization. You can only wipe out the civilization.

Nuclear fission only if contained is useful to be used. But stat says it is still not perfect and safe. Bhopal is what you have as an answer.

Same holds good to building dam, Dam is never built across the river to submerge the vegetation land, rather built to expand the irrigation means.

Do we have to wipe out the civilization of mangalore for industrialization? Think twice

are you living in fantasy world ?
one side yadiyurappa giving Rs 2/ per liter for milk and assure that he will not allow to acquire farmers land for mega projects and otherside he will snatch the land from the farmers for the MSEZ projects through KIADB. Be practical. If Farmers agriculture land was aquired for mega projects , then where these poor farmers will go? and where they can cultivate ?
If this will continue then one day we have to depend on either china or other countries for grains and all agriculture products. Karnataka have many dry land which is useless for agriculture where KIADB can aquire it for SEZ projects not in agriculture land in mangalore. And morever MRPL and other mega companies promised to give job to local people but they are conducting interviews in either Chenni and other places outside mangalore. And morever they will pollute our environment also

To the people who are against Industrialisation.
Its easy for people like is to stay in place like gulf or other parts of the developed world than India and say NO we dont need Industrialisation. But look what it has done to region like gulf who dint have anything except sand and date trees once upon a time.

There is no choice and it too late and cry coz we are responsible for this situation when we couldnt control population explosion. Evry problem in India , the root comes and ends at population. We have to check that one fist and then try to solve others. No matter weather we like or dont like Industrialisation or not but that is the need of the hour. No youth is ready today after Patrao to go to feild and work. Evryone wants salary job. what will Patrao do to his farm after his time.

Ms Patrao, work out a compromise formula otherwise you will loose everything. Remember you are fighting against MRPL which comes under Petroleam Ministry. They have the power to do anything from State to center. Why simply this cry after you know you have excepted their money ten years back, filed a case lost it, till when will you fight ? what will you get at the end of it ?. After investing thousands of Crores do you think they will stop at your doorstep just coz you have some mee support ?

Generously GOI should amend Land Reforms and constitutions to fasten the growth of economy by bringing equal distribution of wealth, reduce corruption in the departments, & IT should restrict each individual to hold limited land property (so that there will a hold to recent raise (sky high) in land rates)...better GOI should intervene and properly compensate the sufferers to the Gov projects

Dear Nagesh, Please give a pause and think differently.

Please look from humanity point of view. Parties such as BJP, org like RSS or VHP are temporary shelters for those who live or trapped in them. Same for those under other banners such as Cong, JD, or whatever.

Religion is something like a core culture of humans. Dont touch it, does not matter one likes or not. In a nutshell, religion is the one that makes man to grow towards better path, with right phylosophies.

Vetican, Varanasi, Mecca, and Amritsar are none other than the religious icons of different religion and nobody has right to point to those.

Judiciary system, legislation, law and order are what the society created, for some disciplinary measures. But it is never perfect in a given time, so is the process of metamorphism.

There are always all traits of people in the society. But it is our duty to cope-up with the stress and correct them if we can, to best of our extent. And that too with no blame to the family, race, religion, country, and so on.

Key message is "Think global, Think human".

I fully agree with Gilson. Mangalore has already been converted into a concrete jungle without resort to any planning whatsoever. End result is chaos and haphazard development at the cost of the common man.

People with short term view and greed give in seeing the big one time compensation they get and move out. But real long term thinkers with an open mind like Gregory Patrao would never give up their lands, these are the real sons of the soil, the real farmers.

Nagarjuna Power's plant is already driving away the farmers from the adjoining lands due to blatant environmental regulation violations, but who cares, all in authority cannot open their mouths coz they have been bought, Who cares???

See BP which is now on the verge of bankruptcy coz of oil spilling from one of its deep water wells in the US, such should be the force of regulations!!

There is so much of barren land in DK along with extreme poverty, why these co's are not going there and developing these places?? See a newly developed port in Gujarat (Mundra Port) which has been developed on 14000 acres of arid and barren land thus bringing real development and employment to scores of people improving the quality of life of the poverty stricken inhabitants, such should be the attitude, not of pseudo development at the cost of destruction of bountiful nature and fertile food producing mother earth.

Gregory is very right in fighting for his rights and nothing can come in his way as God is surely with him.......

To Abba and many more who are in favour of industrialization in Mangalore.

FYI, In the name of Industrialization, the entire Mangalore and DK land would be eventually acquired. Wild life would be at your doorsteps, Noise would be above 90db for one to experience deafness at the age of 50, not 60 . Societies would eventually be dominated by Dialysis centres, radiation-theraphy and what not.

We have already experienced the wave of Konkan Railway, Road enlargement, conversion of state HW to National HW, Power plants, Sugar plant, earlier phase of MRPL, etc etc.,

Thousands of companies like these are acquiring thousands of acres of land each, all in the name of building plants, building a campus, apartments to the employess etc.,

One fine day, when things are bad for these companies, they realize a huge profit out of real-estate sale. This has already been seen by the world and still going on. Even companies such as Infosys needs thousands over acre of land - for what ? Software industries dont need land to mine software bugs. But for sure, they have a long vision of making money, but primarily - the poor people would lose their fertile land.

God bless one and all. We know our fate anyway. I guess dominant portion of the society is abroad in middle east. If waves are stronger than the MRPL, then perhaps, the entire population would end up taking jobs abroad and live peacefully.
