Government Decides to Call Off Semester System in High Schools

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SB)

Bangalore, Jul 31: Minister for primary and secondary education Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said the government has decided to call off the semester system in the interest of better education with immediate effect. The semester system for classes eight and nine was introduced a few years ago after students and teachers resisted introduction of trimester system.

“Students have to gear up for the tenth class examination (SSLC) and the attempt will be to prepare them better commencing from class eight and nine”, said Kageri. However, he added that there will be no change in the syllabus or even the textbooks for standard VIII and IX. The present semester examination at the end of the first half of the academic year would be termed as a mid-term examination and the finals will be held at the end of the year.

Kageri said reforms for the SSLC examinations would continue and objective-type questions (multiple-choice questions) would be for 25 marks while the essay type questions will be for 75 marks in all the subjects. On the distribution of textbooks and complaints of delay, the minister said nearly 90 per cent of the textbooks for government schools (free of cost) and that of the sale copies (nearly 90 per cent of the requirement for children in the unaided schools) had been distributed. He added that the shortage will be rectified in about a week.

Excellent decision by the government. This will reduce the pressure on students and help them lead a seemingly normal student life...For schools which have 6 subjects per year semester system was not necessary. And when semester system is introduced children just aim on scoring and dont shed light on actual learning. This destroys the childhood of students who should be tension free, happy and open to learning new things....They also can concentrate on extra curricular activities....that makes a school life cool and pressure free...

It's indeed quite saddening to see the way we play with the future of students. Annual examination is like one-day match. Sachin played unbelievable and brilliant knocks till the finals of the 2003 world cup but failed in the finals against Australians. The judgement was immediately out that he is not a good player at all. Is that true? No! Similarly on the day of the annual examination, the student might be ailing, having some personal problems which will not enable to do well in exams. And if he fails, he becomes a 'Danda-pinda' overnight. So within 3 hours the fate of a student is sealed. If he gets distinction he wil choose Science, if he gets a little lower and remains in second class he is fit for Commerce and those who are in 'third class' and cross the line by whisker are meant for Arts stream! Hua! This is our education system, mug up as if one's life depends entirely on those 3 hours. Our children stand first in all the examinations during their schooling but fail utterly when they face the first examination of their life after the schooling! How strange! We teach them how to earn, how to win, how to defeat and how to compete but never we teach them how to face life and live. Today's education is producing parasites who are dependent on their parents till they are 20-22 and when they are independent later, they totally severe themselves from the tree they were living on. But sad is that they never become trees themselves later to shelter someone else.
