Bengaluru, Apr 29: Deputy chief minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, who is also in charge of the medical education portfolio, said the state government was in oxygenated beds so as to face any kind of emergencies.

"We need to be prepared in advance not only to handle the present second wave spurt in the Covid infection cases but also futures waves or any other emergency that may arise in future,’’ he said after visiting the M S Ramaiah Memorial Hospital on the arrangements to handle the Covid cases in the hospital on Thursday.

Dr Narayan said many medical colleges and private hospitals have sufficient beds available. But the state government was in need of oxygenated beds. In emergency situations, oxygenated beds become more vital, he said stressing the need for the medical system to be alert on a 24x7 basis.

He appreciated the management of M S Ramaiah Hospital in positively responding to the state government’s requests to treat the Covid positive patients.

Dr Narayan also stressed the need to ensure that the government or private hospitals should not face any shortage of medical personnel and suggested that the services of the final year MBBS students could also be utilized under the guidance of senior doctors. The state government is ready to bring necessary changes in the system to enable such changes, he said.

The deputy chief minister mentioned that noted heart surgeon Dr Devi Shetty has given several suggestions and the State Government was willing to consider them for implementation.

Later, he held a discussion with doctors and other senior medical persons of Malleswaram and suggested that the Covid patients must be provided with necessary guidance and treatment from the initial stage itself so as to ensure that the infection does not become a serious problem.

Testing and providing results without delay and certainly within 24 hours is most essential to effectively tackle the pandemic, he said.

Dr Narayan also launched a dedicated helpline for the people of the Malleswaram Assembly constituency, which is represented by him. He asked the people to get themselves vaccinated as it was the best weapon against the pandemic.
