Mangalore, Aug 24: The fishing community in the city offered Samudra puja led by Elu Patna Mogaveera Samyukta Sabha, under the guidance of Raja Sandhyanat Swami of Kadri temple here on Tuesday August 24.

Swami Raja Sandhyanat in his address to the gathering said that worshiping the sea lord is a contemporary tradition in the country. It is offered to appease the lord and seek blessings and protection during fishing sprees. It is also an occasion to express gratitude for the abundance of catch that sustained the fishermen, said Swami Raja Sandhyanat.

Swami Raja Sandhyanat also graced a grand procession from Brahma Bobbarya temple, Bokkapatna to Tannirbavi, passing through Sultan Battery along the Gurpur rivulet. The puja offerings of milk, fruits and coconuts were made to the sea to show gratitude for continued protection by the sea lord.

State Mogaveera executive committee secretary Vasudev Bolar, Elu Patna Mogaveera Samyukta Sabha president Devdas Gurikar Jeppu, Yuva Vedike Jogi Samaj president Mahesh Kumar and others were present.

The fishing community observed a holiday on Tuesday to participate in the annual ritual. The Samudra puja marks the beginning of a new fishing season.

    Very nice pictures. Thanks Daiji!
Missing namma kudla so much! As Max & Jessie rightly pointed out, our sea waters have been virgin and free from "man made calamities". May good Lord bless these people.

Mr.Aboobaker: Your comments just displays your upbringing. You have no place in a civic society. How can you be so disgusting?! Shame!

There is God inside every human being, and God directs every human being in mysterious ways.
If God has directed these people to honour the sea, no one has the right question their actions. Each individual is anserable to himself/herself and not to others.

Dont you think what they are doing is better than using a religion to kill others.

Look at the dedication, sincerity, belief, simplicity that glows on their face. Looking at them and the mother nature, as if promising a bounty to all her believers, worshippers, the rationale behind cannot be just explained by words, It has to be felt at the heart and then one will have eternal peace and joy. That is the beauty of our multi-ethnic society.

The strength of Hinduism comes from it's liberal structure allowing people to worship anything and everything in whichever way they want. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the soul touch the whole. And there could be millions of ways to touch the whole. If one learns to appreciate the beauty in everything that different communities do, no one will ever comment like Mr. Aboobaker.

May Almighty God bless the Fishing Community abundantly and protect the fishermen from all the dangers and perils. I have great respect for them as the community is widely known for their bravery and to give life to life.

Mr. Aboobaker Uppala, it is highly appreciated that you refrain yourself from making such comments, as India is known for its multi-culture, traditions and customs.

Aboobaker: "Samudra pooja" is just a symbol. But the main core about "Samudra pooja" is "the giving back thanks to the Nature".. Hindu's believe nature as a God.. if nature rewarded to fishermen then they can serve peoples hunger  more than this... so they just are praying to nature with this small celebration..

aboobaker uppala, uppala/Holy Makkah, whoever you are, please grow-up and show some respect to yourself and others and their religion and belief. One who does not respect others and their belief, does not have respect for himself, like your case. Refrain from making such ill thought and shy comments in this public forum.

WORSHIPPING THE SEA? SAMUDRA POOJA? FROM WHICH HINDU SCRIPTURES OR VEDA THEY GOT SUCH WORSHIPPING? INSTEAD OF THROWING THE MILK, FRUITS AND THE COCONUTS TO THE STOMACH OF THE HUNGRY PEOPLES,SIMPLY THROWING TO THE SEA? THEY WOULD HAVE GET A LOT OF REWARD FROM THE LORD.

What a wonderful blessing upon the Fishing Community added with colorful rituals, traditions and customs surrounded the recently celebrated "Samudhra Puja". So much of fresh and tasty fish made available day after day by the fishing community. Nowadays they not only sell the fish but also clean the fish and also pack the cleaned fish with a smile.

Some of these traditions and festivals in Mangalore are indeed priceless. When we observe the tragedy of Gulf of Mexico caused due to the BP Oil disaster and the resultant fate of tens of thousands of fishermen who have lost their fishing career, it is gratifying to feel that our oceans have been saved from any calamity and our fishermen are ready to set their sail day after day bringing us the fresh fish at each sunrise.

We have had the opportunity to visit the Bunder area where they sell the fish wholesale every morning and it is fascinating to see so many variety of fish, big and small, made available at a reasonable price. God bless our fishermen and their daily profession of catching fish and selling fish to meet the growing demand. Our lake fish, our river fish and our sea fish is indeed tasty and nice.
