Mangalore: Student Drowns at Tannirbavi, Three Saved

Mangalore, Sep 6: Out of the two students, a boy and a girl, who were drowning at Tannirbavi beach on Sunday September 5 evening, the girl student was saved.

Anish (19) from Ponnampet in Madikeri taluk, was washed away into the sea, and efforts made by teams to trace him did not succeed. Reshma (19) from Somwarpet, was saved. The two were from among a group of four boy students and five girl students of a one-year diploma course in hotel and hospitality management, being run by Western Institute of Technology in Kadri here.

Reportedly, these students stay in a hostel in Mannagudda in the city, and went to Tannirbavi at around 2 pm. While Reshma and Anish were walking in the water, picking up sea shells, a huge wave washed them away. Another student, Mithun, lugged forward and held Reshma’s hand firmly, saving her from drowning. Reshma, who lost consciousness in the incident, was admitted into a private hospital’s intensive care unit. The Panambur police have registered a case.

Life guards of the Tourism development project in the meantime, saved Vinay (25) and K P Kishore (32) from Bangalore, when both of them cried for help after being washed away by huge waves at around 1.30 pm on Sunday. On Sunday, rip currents were experienced in Arabia Sea, which can be deadly, considering that the sea is very deep at several spots near the Tannirbavi beach.
