Bengaluru, Aug 28: The controversial circular issued by the Vice Chancellor of Mysuru University restricting movement of girl students in the campus after 6 pm in order to ensure their safety following the shameful gang rape of a MBA student near the Kukkarahalli lake area on the foot of Chamundi Hills in Mysuru has been withdrawn, Higher Education Minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan said in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the CET Examination Centre at Sheshadripura College in the city to inspect the arrangements, the minister said he has already spoken the Mysuru University Vice Chancellor.

He said the University Vice Chancellors should take adequate measures to tighten the security and patrolling within the campuses.

“It is the responsibility of the Vice-Chancellors to ensure safety within the campuses. They should best make use of available technology to step up surveillance within the University campuses,’’ Dr Narayana said.

The minister advised the Vice Chancellors to consider use of drones to beef up the vigilance.

Dr Narayan said he would discuss with all the concerned about stepping up patrolling within the campuses of universities.

The University campuses are normally vast. But that does not mean girl students cannot move around within the campuses. It is necessary to ensure safety of all students by tightening the security in all universities, he said.

The minister said the freedom of movement of girl students cannot be curbed merely because the gang rape incident, which has to be condemned. But the incident is a reminder to beef security by installing CC TV cameras and increasing the patrolling by security staff and even by enlisting the help of police, he said and mentioned that suitable directions will be issued to all University Vice Chancellors in the State.

Congratulates Police for Cracking the Case

The Minister said Karnataka has over 32 Government controlled and private Universities in the State and generally the security is good in all University campuses.

Dr Narayan warmly complimented the police for nabbing the culprits quickly and said such persons must be dealt with sternly. The culprits cannot be allowed to escape the rule of law, he asserted.

Why these crimes against women are increasing unabated after BJP came into power in 2014????…..It wasn’t so bad when congress was ruling. If the govt decides to put an end to it, it can do it but it’s in BJP agenda to curb women of thier rights and make them vulnerable. One of the BJP minister was suggesting women not to go college and study further and be house wives.

Good that progressive sense prevailed. Otherwise tomorrow they can make another circular not to send girls to college! (as our system is not capable enough to protect girls).
