Mangaluru: Waste management, a big challenge - Landfill fraught with danger

Mangaluru, Aug 28: Right from villagers to big cities, waste management has of late, posed a huge problem. Urban areas in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have been producing huge amounts of waste every day. Scientific processing has become a jargon only found in records. If the situation is left untouched, in future, they can pose a big danger.

Even though the government has repeatedly announced that waste in urban local bodies would be scientifically managed, this announcement has not been fully implemented. In most of the municipal administrations, even now processed waste is being buried inside the earth.

For example, Puttur produces 15 tonnes of waste every day. Recyclable waste is sent to the scrap shop and the remaining waste is used as landfill. Other bodies also follow similar practice. These bodies concentrate on using the waste as landfill instead of completely processing the waste scientifically. This practice can spell danger on a future day.

Beltangady town panchayat creates 4.9 tonnes of waste everyday where after processing, the remaining waste is used as landfill. Other towns like Vittal, Bantwal and Moodbidri etc follow similar practices. Udupi municipality gets 71 tonnes of waste everyday while Mangaluru produces 330 tonnes of waste. Only a part of this is being processed. Waste from Ullal municipality is also being dumped in Mangaluru. Kotekar waste also is transported to Pachanady in the city.

Fisheries minister S Angara says that all the local administrations should concentrate on segregation of the waste scientifically and proper disposal. Mayor Premananda Shetty, said that dry and wet waste are separately collected in the city with a 70 percent success rate.

    I do understand the problem this is because the corporation is collecting garbage from households, even were there are huge compounds. Earlier we had garbage pits at a street corner and only people who could not dispose garbage in their premises like apartments, commercial holdings, small plots and etc. Now since all garbage is been collected by the corporation it is a colossal task. I do request people with huge compounds and medium plots to re cycle their wet waste and hence would reduce burden for the corrupt MCC to dispose it.

    I think easy way is to learn the new technology, send our MCC officials to USA, EUROPE, JAPAN AND CHINA. Surely they will bring the knowledge from the tour.

    There is no political will to properly address the solid waste management. Government coins only big slogans. But there is no sensible action on ground. People are also responsible to a great extent in aggravating this problem. It is high time we discard linear economy, that is take, use and discard and adopt circular economy that is take, use and recycle.
