Udupi: Conch shaped worms bothering residents of Devinagara in Parkala

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Oct 5: A strange type of worm, shaped like Conch, is seen in almost all the houses in the vicinity of Devinagara of Parkala in the district. Heaps of these worms are bothering the residents of this area as they are seen inside the houses.

These worms are seen in large numbers in the houses of local residents Udayakumar, Sarswati, Dilshad, Aboobacker, Nihal, Hotel Mandara and surrounding areas.

These worms can be seen under the city limits of the Parkala area, on the walls of the houses, on coconut trees and plants and compound walls of the houses. These crawl inside the houses also.

“Part of Devinagar area belongs to Udupi city municipality while other part falls under panchayat. The citizens living in this area are facing huge inconvenience due to these worms. So the concerned health department officers of city municipality as well as panchayat should visit this area and spray chemicals to eradicate the menace of the worms,” said local social workers Ganesh Raj Saralebettu and Rajesh Prabhu of Parkala.

Residents of Devinagar say that these worms have been bothering them in the last three years. However, this year their number is quite large compared to the previous years.

Before making comments on destroying and cooking, please check if they are harmful to nature or has poison...then only decide....investigate....if these numbers increase it may have health issues or destruction of nature.

,@ Ignatius. "care must be taken to remove shell( poison and can cause bad smell toilet)" Thanks for the information. There are enough foods available in India. Small snails which are found in shallow riverside or paddy fields are tastier, also sea shells (Kube) I enjoy whenever I go down to Mangalore.

Thank you Flavin for your comment, Kube is also very tasty when prepared with coconut 🥥 but these giant snails taste different, it is totally worth trying them . Streetside vendors prepare them Chinese style near milagres , with soy sauce and spring onions, Because of strict hygiene regulations they do not advertise on menu board ,partly also because snails are seasonal so difficult to set price because of distance they cover in migration process . Totally worth the experience though it makes stomach rumble with kur kur sounds of mucus gliding in the bowel but it is good for stomach clean of toxins. The bad smell of toilet can be mitigated by opening ventilation and spraying harpic or odonil, usually lasts 2 days .

These are giant snails 🐌, common in the rainy season, they hibernate in summer or migrate to colder regions of the country. Extensive studies by snail expert Dr Shashi Raja have shown that half way through their migration process they realise that summer is about to end so they return to point of origin. As it happens they find places of colder climate and settle there before they can reach their base destination. Centuries of this migration is how these snails reached India from Africa. Geotagging these snails can conclusively prove their domicile. These snails are very tasty if marinated and fried in garlic sauce, they can also be used as a substitute for amoeba or cheenya chicken in malabar biriyani ,care must be taken to remove shell( poison and can cause bad smell toilet)

These types of snails were never there in olden days. Must have been brought or migrated from original source or places from Africa by some means. What we used to see during rainy season those days were the inner part of snails climbing the walls and plants in rainy season. (without hard shell) If they are harmful to vegetation government must work on eradicating this breed so that they would not consume farmers produce.

Salt is a good solution for these giant snails. If you sprinkle some salt on snails ,they will die immediately.

Please study them and think of rearing them in large numbers. Pack them in attractive packages and ship them to China, and I bet you will make a lot of money. Snails are also a delicacy in French cuisine.

These are snails; make awesome French delicacy, “ Escargot” We should try making our delicacies “hinga udda” (Konkani for Asafoetida Water) and “phanna upkari” (finding tough to translate this, but searching the phrase will sure give the recipe on YouTube) substituting shrimp with this. I bet, most people will love 💕 it

Few days back I was told and forwarded a photo on watts App about such strange living creatures commonly known as snails but snails are usually found in paddy fields or soft mud I believe. These new moving worms are big in size about 5-6 cm . I googled to know more about these type of snails which are originated in Africa and USA have totally banned bring them live or for any purpose because they have destroyed the green vegetation in the country. Small snails are usually sold in the fish market along with sea shells (marvai). These type of snails are consumed in African countries it seems. Let the authorities make thorough study of this unknown phenomenon.

Flavs those available in the fields are called "konge" in konkani and many eat them. They do not have small tail like these snails. These are called one of the varieties of "pikul". These are very sticky. In mumbai, you get to see those snails ten times bigger than this especially during rainy season. It looks like big truck carrying sacks of beedi leaves on the road.....yuckkkk. All should be parcelled to USA....Patent levo ji

Flavian Kuwaitthey are not African snails but are vinyard snails. They are mostly in vinyard move and keep eggs.During cold times such as in winter wander into a safe place ,and later go out for vegetation place. We too see them here in winter to hide where warm is.Harmless.Some will become big ,Dont spray to them .They are more helpfull to eat any other wurm or so. harmful to vegetation.Suppose they are big in Hotels in France etc.are a delicacy.Have to be kept i water for one or two days to cleaning sake .without removing the shells are cooked in wein .How I dont know.As cocons hang on walls or safer places.we see them in garten too on small plants
