Udupi, Oct 21:"Stringent legal action will be taken against those who violate the Manual Scavenging Act in the district," said deputy commissioner (DC) Kurma Rao M.

He was speaking during the district awareness programme organised for the civic workers at the DC office here on Thursday October 21.

"The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act has been implemented from 2013. In this regard, awareness should be created among the public. Legal action will be taken without any hesitation against those who violate this law," the DC said.

He also asked the officials to ensure that the government programmes and schemes meant for civic workers and for the development of their families reach the deserved beneficiaries. Hold workshop to educate the civic workers working in local institutions on government schemes and about the prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. If possible, ensure the facilities on the spot, DC said.

“Release grants for the beneficiaries identified for the house construction scheme. Identify the land for the construction of houses for the homeless civic workers on priority, he told the officials. The DC also asked the assistant commissioner to allot 'DC Manna' land to the civic workers who are ready to quit their present work and interested in agriculture activities.

“Liquefied waste should be cleaned through sucking machines and the Udupi City Municipal Council should cooperate with local institutions to dispose off the waste scientifically,” he said.

Zilla panchayat CEO Dr Naveen Bhat, zilla panchayat deputy secretary Kiran Phadnekar, assistant commissioner of Kundapur K Raju, deputy director of Social Welfare department Anitha Mudloor and others were present.
