Mangaluru: Indoor stadium with top facilities near Urwa Market coming up

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 30: The construction of the indoor stadium with Kabaddi and shuttle badminton courts which had been kept in the backburner for the last three and half years, has begun. It will have national level facilities.

Mangaluru Smart City Ltd is executing this work worth Rs 18.81 crore. Work order for the construction was given on August 13 this year. Now the work of digging holes for the planting of pillars is going on at a brisk pace. M/s Mugrody Constructions has bagged the contract. The company has been asked to complete the work within 24 months, that is by August 2023.

The proposed stadium will be 15 metres in height. It will have nine metre high interchangeable court for Kabaddi on the model of Srinivas Mallya stadium. It will be possible to interchange the courts for Kabaddi and shuttle badminton based on the needs. There will be three courts for Kabaddi and five for badminton. There will be seating arrangement for 800 at the rate of 400 on each side. There will be four levels on both the sides in which cloak rooms, changing rooms for children and elders, locker rooms and toilets will be constructed.

Smart city engineer Chandrakanth, said that there will be a toilet block for the public, administrative office, lodging facility for the sportsmen and women, gymnasium, indoor games room, VIP lounge, medical room, physiotherapy and parking at the basement.

The foundation stone for the stadium had been laid on March 22, 2018 by the then minister for youth services and sports, Pramod Madhwaraj. Because of opposition from some people for the international level indoor stadium costing Rs 32 crore, a detailed project report for the national level stadium worth Rs 20 crore had been prepared. With the efforts of MLA Vedavyasa Kamath, the project is being implemented under the smart city. Now preparations are being made to lay the foundation stone for the second time.

A sum of ten crore rupees had been sanctioned for the indoor stadium at Urwa in the past but for lack of follow up, it had been returned. Now the stadium construction with an investment of Rs 18.81 crore has been taken up.

This contract is given to same local contractor who does other smart city works too. The works done by this contractor is total unscientific and not even 1 works are worth to be praised and moreover high quotations. a reputed company woould have been better Instead of these small stadium a multiporpose stadium woould have been better with cricket... many other Tier-2cities have multipurpose stadiums

This contractor seems to keep getting most of the contracts for the jobs under taken under the Smart City projects. The underpass near the clock tower in the Gandhi park has been going on for nearly 2 years & still no signs of getting completed in the near future.

Hope that this stadium also does not become a white elephant (unusable) like the new market built near the same place; spending crores of rupees.
