Sullia: Korga families converted to Christianity denied govt facilities in Panja GP

Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia (MS)

Sullia, Nov 3: The families who got converted to Christianity as they felt that they were oppressed by the higher caste people in the Hindu religion to which they belonged are in dire straits now.

As these families who originally belonged to the Koraga community are Christians now, they are not getting any facilities. Now they are urging for compensation with the administration. These families reside in Pallodi under the limits of Sullia gram panchayat (GP).

Around 1965 these Koraga caste families arrived at Pallodi of Panja gram panchayat from Manjeshwar of Kerala state. During those days when caste system in Hinduism was at its peak and people of lower castes were oppressed by the higher caste Hindus. In order to get rid of the oppression, these families got converted to Christianity under the then parish priest of Panja church. The church also provided them with small houses.

One of the houses in Pallodi

Arrangements were also made to provide all government facilities to these families from the local mandala panchayat. However, now the present gram panchayat is not providing the facilities as there is confusion in the family records. The names of some members of the family is Hindu in the Aadhar card while others have Christian names. That is why these families are deprived from getting the facilities from the government which are given to scheduled tribe castes.

The houses of all these families are in dilapidated condition. They are unable to get the government scheme to build houses also. Except the cross that is hanging from their necks and crosses in their homes, these people are not officially taken into Christianity. So they neither get the facilities given for scheduled tribes nor those that are provided for minorities. If they approach Panja gram panchayat they are told to go to the church and get facilities.

The earlier mandal panchayats were giving all facilities to these families. However, now the gram panchayat is denying the same facilities.

These families make their living by weaving baskets from the branches that are available in nearby jungles. They are suffering from malnutrition. Local administration has to come to their aid and help them out of this situation.

I think, as per rules religiously converted people wont get the benefits of their old religion as well as new religion. Actually the facilities based on religion/caste are given to mainstream the status of the people who belong to that particular religion /caste. If facilities are introduced for converted people, then they can avail it. As per my view, such converted people should not demand any facilities which are introduced for 'general' people of a particular religion /caste.

Why can’t the church take an initiative to help the poor parishners. Even if the Panja church can’t afford due to financial issues , the matter should be brought to Bishops attention . There are so many rich churches in Mangaluru as well as in Udipi who can help. The poor Koraga community converts should not be left in dilapidated conditions The church people offer them heaven while persuading them to convert and leave them in the same conditions they used to be earlier It’s the failure of the Catholic Church It is still no too late to take some immediate measures to help the poor people

I agree with you sir. Infact, i too wanted to say the same thing. When these people got converted into Christianity, then why they do continue their age old professions like basket weaving etc ? Give them jobs ....train them in tailoring, computers, most talented ones must be trained into teaching line, engineering, nursing , so many diploma courses are there etc. If they were trained well, now they would have been self sufficient. The parents would have taken up the burden to teach the present generation. Why they should run to pillar to post ...under sc/st quota ? Once they converted, they must have got Christian surnames. How anyone can say they belong to sc/st after getting converted ? Then, whar right do we have, when dalits are treated inhumanly by uppercaste hindu religion ? We too do the same. Our diocese is very rich. As our gentleman said here, almost all the churches in Mangaluru are very rich....Every church derives good income through halls by means of various functions......There are many good families also, who can afford..and, who will be ever ready to become sponsor or patron on request, provided that all the expenses pertaining to education should be viewed personally and should undertake personally by themselves. We have our own school/colleges ..They can give free education for them.... After they got converted, its not good to leave them like this. Still, why we call them koragas even after becoming Christians?

Richard corda, Shirva, Richard, shirva/sharjah , suppose you are a Christian you would have never written that the Christians and bishops are not helping the poors. For your information, each and every Church has St. Vincent Paul's Society. They are identifying every poor Christians of their own Churches and helping them weekly or monthly with rice, grains and if required with money received from the donors of the faithful. How come you are not aware of St. Vincent Paul's Society assisting the poor Christians. St. Vincent Paul's Society members are selflessly working without drumbeats and are involved in poor Christians upliftment of each and every Churches of their own. Don't be ignorant if you are a Christian. I suspect you have commented in two names which are fake names.

I've also seen several govt officials who are following the same. There are poor brahmins who are deprived of Govt facilities including the reservation system in jobs/ education/ subsidies/ incentives etc. Abolish those aged old caste / religion based reservation system Govt should consider the schemes/benefits based on their Income level and merit, irrespective of their Caste / religion to claim those benefits.

Having number of wives, dozens of children without proper planning whether they can afford all these and then blame the government. It is not only the govt responsibility, but its first and foremost citizens duty to overcome poverty. Country will never move forward and so called national integration will be a farce without the abolition of caste system. It’s high time Hindus should adhere to the reforms propagated by Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Raja Ram Mohan Roy and others. In today’s situation there are haves and have-nots in all communities. BPL cards must be issued to the economically backward after careful scrutiny and government facilities / reservations be provided to holders of such cards irrespective of caste and creed.

It is unfortunate that peoples' religion is taken into account for providing government facilities. We should seriously think as to why the lower caste Hindus are opting to convert to Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. It is because other religions treat them as equal citizens and no discriminations are made. All of us are created by one and only God and there is no difference amongst us. If a religion teaches discrimination based on their birth, remember, there is serious a lacuna in its tenets. It is high time that the Upper caste Hindus reform their religion and treat Dalits in a human manner. You will agree that these Dalits deserve a better treatment than cattle.

This fanatic government does not understand that each and every Christian in this country is a convert. Their fore father's were either Hindu or Muslim. They converted for several reasons and still the process is going on. Religion is a personal decision of the citizens of India safe guarded by the constitution So does this government want all Christians to revert back. Is there any sense in doing a survey. This government is exploiting the religious feelings of Hindus by firing up their thoughts and emotions with wrong ideas and hatred for the sake of votes.

Why do you want them to get reverted. It is their fundamental choice to know and worship God. Similarly it is the fundamental duty of us to teach others true one right God. You go to them and preach, let Christians too preach and similarly Muslims too preach. The choice finally depends on the person which is the right path. This is hpw it was before and this is how it should always be. The right to understand and right to worship true God cannot be suppressed by anyone.

But if they converted to Christianity or Muslim there is no objection.they can enter any church any masjid As long as we belong to God he will never object us to enter into his House. Therefore you guys come out from that religion and choose whichever religion you like. If they herrass you for convertion issue then tell them. You don't allow us in temple or you discriminate us.

Recently we saw a group of people protest about a poem by Nobel laureate about entering temples or places of worship. Yes we build big grand structures but forbid some from entering them. Let us see living God among people without seeing their caste, color or their faith as all are created by same Creator. Let us help them come up in life with education and tapping their talents passed on from generations by not exploiting them but by nurturing them. Build better humans first and have better societies and nation for all. I ask devotees help the poor around instead of pouring money into places of worship, without followers they will not last longer. We can see more places of worship are sold as no devotees exist in Europe . Save people to save culture and faihs first instead of competing with others in erecting grand buildings. History won't be kinder if we persist with discrimination and apartheid. I noticed some advising them to revert to their past faith, why not highest level of caste? According to Veda people are known by their living ( actions) and not by birth one can become a Brahmin, if it is true can we accept them as priests instead of koragas?
