Kasargod, Nov 17: In earlier days all the ration cards in Kasargod district were printed in Kannada and Malayalam languages. As many as 95% of the residents of Kasargod district are Kannadigas whose mother tongue is either Tulu or Kannada. The new ration cards issued in Kasargod district are only in Malayalam and English.

The ministry of minority affairs has issued a letter to Maharashtra government on a similar matter to safeguard the interest of Kannadigas in Maharashtra state who are minorities there as per the constitutional provisions under article 350A.

Dr C Somashekhara, chairman, Karnataka Border Area Development Authority has written a letter to G R Anil, Kerala minister of food and civil supplies on November 16 requesting to issue necessary directions to the district administration to issue ration cards in both Kannada and Malayalam languages so that the rights of linguistic minorities are protected in the area.
