Mangaluru, Dec 1: Noting that the international airport and New Mangalore Port Trust here can play a stellar role to stop the spread of Omicron variant of coronavirus, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, Dr K V Rajendra, stressed the need to be vigilant and take precautionary measures to find out about the presence of infected people if any.
He was speaking at a meeting convened to examine the need to conduct checks on passengers coming from other states and countries, and to keep an eye on them, on Tuesday November 30. "People visiting the airport should necessarily be in possession of RT-PCR test reports. If during the test they are found to be positive, they should immediately be admitted into hospital through an ambulance. The manager of the airport has been vested with the responsibility of shifting the infected people to hospitals," he stated.
The DC said that there is a need to subject passengers arriving at New Mangalore Port Trust by international and national carriers to Covid tests. He instructed the trust to submit weekly details about the arrival of passengers, how many ships reached the port etc to the offices of the deputy commissioner and the district health and family welfare office.
He said that people visiting the city corporation office have to provide the details of first and second dose vaccinations. As a large number of people visit the regional transport office every day, they too should provide information about vaccination. Vehicles arriving from Kerala and Maharashtra into the district should be examined, and the passengers in these vehicles need to be in possession of RT-PCR reports. If their reports are not provided at the time of checking, steps will be taken to restrict inter-state transport, he added.
Zilla panchayat chief executive officer Dr Kumar, city corporation commissioner Akshy Sridhar, deputy commissioner of police Hariram Shankar, additional deputy commissioner Channabasappa, sub-divisional officer Madan Mohan, district health and family welfare officer Dr Kishore Kumar and regional transport officer Varnekar, were present.
