Udupi, Dec 15: In the early hours of Tuesday, December 14, a lorry rammed into a huge poll with boards containing road signs. In this accident, the driver of the lorry, identified as Muhammad Taufiq (29) was killed.

Nazarulla (32) from Bhatkal was at the wheel of the insulator truck from Chavakada, Kerala, to Bhatkal.

At Talapady, both Taufiq and Nazarulla had taken some rest in the truck. From there, Taufiq had taken over the driving.

In front of the Honda showroom near santhekatte on national highway 66, the diver lost control over the vehicle, which then jumped over the divider and dashed into a pole holding directional boards. The front portion of the truck was badly damaged. Taufiq, who suffered injuries to his face and limbs, was taken to the district government hospital here. From there he was referred to a private hospital in Manipal for advanced treatment, but the doctors of that hospital found that he had already died.

Nazarulla sustained injuries to his left hand and both legs. The pole was also damaged in the accident. A case has been registered in Udupi traffic police station.
