Mangaluru, Dec 20: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC), Dr Rajendra K V, said that a close vigil is kept in the district in view of the finding that omicron has spread to the district. He also said that the health department has been instructed to find out how a local student who did not travel anywhere got this infection.
The DC said that one of the students of a nursing college in the city who tested positive for the pandemic, was found to have omicron infection. He said all those who were infected have been quarantined, and throat swabs of all those persons in the college campus have been collected and checked. "We have instructed the concerned to collect travel details of all the students. All the five who were infected with omicron are students and none of them travelled outside the state. One among them is a girl student from other state who is studying in the city," he stated.
He said that Dakshina Kannada has close association with Kasargod in Kerala as most of the people from Kasargod and Kannur depend on the city for health services and education. "Positivity rate in Kerala is 8 to 9 percent. Dakshina Kannada district shares a 40 km long border with Kerala. From the city, Kerala border is just ten km away and there are over 70 different points of entry between the two districts. We have been keeping constant watch on these points. We have made RT-PCR report mandatory for those who enter Karnataka from Kerala. Even those who have been vaccinated have to provide travel details without fail," he stressed.
