Mangaluru: Kankanady market to be relocated again, temporary building needs to be vacated

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jan 9: The work of new market building at Kankanady is in progress at one end at a cost of Rs 41.5 crore. However, on the other end, the temporary market that was built by the side of it needs to be shifted again.

The 25-year-old market building was demolished a year and a half ago in order to build a new market. A temporary market was built by the road side at a cost of Rs one crore. As many as 99 shops were operating from the temporary market. It was given a time period of two years. Now it has to be vacated as the new building gets extended to that area. Out of the 99 shops, except fish and meat, 72 shops will be relocated again.

Aluminium sheds are put up on temporary basis at one end of the under-construction building. Corporator Naveen D’Souza says that retaining wall is being built for the safety of public. Two way road is being built from backside of old market to service centre, church, prayer centre, shopping malls and residential areas.

Many people have fallen due to the bad connecting road to the market from the main road. Many vehicles are damaged. Locals curse the city corporation for the poor infrastructure.

Mayor Premananda Shetty said, “Ultra-modern market and commercial complex of 10 floors and additional ground and basement with six stories for parking of vehicles is being built at Kankanady. Seventy-one two wheelers and 505 cars can be parked in that space. The new market will be ready around September 2022.”

the city in general is a mess. Numerous new bldgs were asked to give setback on road but given addnl FSI to build higher. This for road widening, footpath and public parking. But the shops in the redeveloped bldgs have their security to refuse allow parking on the now public space. Over the last fortnight my car tyre was punctured near SCS hospital ( by a Jewellers security), again in front of Martins Hypermarket, and again near a Wine shop at Kavoor junction. Traffic Commissioner must issue public notice as to who is the owner of open soace where set back has been obtained by MCC or other authorities.
