Hassan, Jan 11: National Highways Authority of India has written to deputy commissioner of the district, R Girish, seeking to close Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75 for a period of six months to execute four lane road construction there.

If the permission is given, the road might be closed shortly. The district administration has asked public works department to think on alternatives if this road is closed for traffic, and submit a report thereof. Currently barring a few sections, there is four lane road between Bengaluru and Hassan. Four lane road is already being laid between Hassan and Sakleshpur. Rajkamal, the concern which is executing the work, has to bring huge machinery and construct the road from Marnahalli to Donigal and also huge piles of raw materials have to be stored. In certain sections, huge protective walls have to be built and sharp curves have to be handled.

There is a proposal to direct the vehicles to move via Subrahmanya, Bisile Ghat, Alur and Hassan. But only ordinary vehicles can be allowed on this road. The deputy commissioner also wants to know from the experts whether the work at Shiradi can be hastened and what alternative routes can be proposed if this road is closed for traffic.
