Shivamogga: Loss in areca nut business - Thirthahalli couple ends life

Shivamogga, Jan 14: Puralukoppa Manjunath (46) from Santhehakkalu village in Thirthahalli taluk, who lost heavily in areca nut business, was overwhelmed with worry and hanged himself on Thursday January 13. Frustrated and agonized at the death of her husband, his wife, Usha (40), too chose to hang herself.

Manjunath was involved with areca nut business for the last five to six years. In the recent past, he had suffered heavy losses. He had raised a loan of over two crore rupees and was overtaken by desperation at having to repay it.

After the couple ended their lives, their two children, Akshay (18) and Akash (16), are orphaned. Many in their village said they were unaware of the problems faced by the couple and that they would have extended help had they known about this problem before.
