China-India trade at record high of over $125 billion despite border tension

New Delhi, Jan 15 (IANS): An increase in China-India trade in 2021, which reached a record high surpassing $125 billion amid bilateral tensions, is just another piece of proof that New Delhi is unable to reduce its dependence on the Chinese market, Beijing's state media claimed.

The total amount of trade between China and India in 2021 stood at $125.66 billion, up 43.3 per cent from 2020, said the Global Times report citing statistics released by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).

Of which, China's exports to India were $97.52 billion, up 46.2 per cent, while China imported $28.14 billion worth of goods from India, up 34.2 per cent.

Analysts attributed the surge in trade to the complementary aspects of the industrial chains of the two countries.

For example, about 50-60 per cent of chemicals and other materials used by the Indian pharmaceutical industry, which is a pillar industry, are imported from China.

India was China's 15th largest trade partner in 2021, the Global Times quoted the GAC as saying.

"Analysts said that the boycott of Made-in-China products will not balance the trade deficit and that boosting India's exports to China is the right choice. Meanwhile, India should not exclude China when it seeks free trade agreements as China is already involved in international free trade mechanisms," the Global Times said.

Total trade between China and countries that have signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) - 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand - expanded significantly in 2021.

Where's the slogan "MAKE IN INDIA". Just to fool the nation. 2012-2014 India was third largest economy in the world, now much below 12th and GDP is much lower than Bangladesh and thrashed India 45 years backwards economically even before covid itself. Jumblagiri continues due to devision of society into on caste basis..

Most of the trade with China is conducted by the Gujju traders. Many of these go and spend time in China to learn how to speak Chinese. Just like it happened with the East India Company, it is the traders within the borders of India that create the atmosphere for the foreigners to have a total choke-hold on India. It is the traders within the borders of India that turn other Indians into the labourers of the foreigners.

For those who are deriving satisfaction that Modi can be targeted because of Chinese excesses, you do not understand China. Chinese general Zhu's philosophy is (a) You cannot live peacefully if you do not have enemies...so make one even if he is not. (b) China has border issues with all its neighbor except Pakistan which surrendered massive tracts of land to China, from where?...Kashmir. (c) South China Sea is a great tool for enemity, it involves all those who share or do not share border but hegemony of China means they will forever be minions in the great game of demonstrating superiority over adversaries - China will never give up its claims on South China sea. (d) With India, there is a problem....Himalayas. Make in India, is a perfect start because, it starts with assembling - it can evolve to sourcing locally. Automobile industry is a good starter on this logic. No, we do not have skill-set to manufacture from scratch and nobody around the world will believe if we proclaimed so. We surrendered our workshop guy, foremen, diploma holder and those who could solve your problem without calling customer care long ago.

Where are the 'Boycott China' nationalists? You can't counter their business model. China is a thousand years ahead of us and we are dependent on their products. That's very clear. The boycott China is an eyewash. In other words it is a 'Jumla'. The 'atmanirbhar', 'make in India' have run out of steam. It is 'fake in India'. Lambi lambi fekte raho. Jab tak India mein andhbhakt rahenge feknewale aur fake will prosper.

It’s mainly Gujju trade. Modi never condemned china’s aggressive act on india. On the contrary Modi praised China and denied any Indian soldier died. Now we know the true story and BJP’s hidden agenda against India.

Dear Veer. Nagpur, I don't know which milk you drink in Nagpur, if you actually lived in Nagpur. Modi did not acknowledge loss of Indian lives at Chinese border? Really? Why did he not do anything to prevent ceremonies in the soldiers' hometown? This is what Chinese did with soldiers they lost there. Extent of lies in your conviction and thought is too much and I am totally surprised at number of people who agreed with your comment. Wow...! Who gave free hand to Indian Army to operate as per the need of the time at all the borders? Did it happen before 2014? Most importantly, what is preventing you from divulging your real identity...Veer Nagpur...? You are not Veer of anything if we are to construe based on your comments...:-))))

Only a guilty person will shun way from holding open press conference on such a extremely sensitive and important national issue of incursion. Nation is waiting for him to come out of his 56”… and face the reality in front of the people. Never in his Bundal speeches he has ever specifically mentioned ‘China’ by name on its illegal occupation of Indian territory. Modi went to China 6 times with his cronies when he was Gujrat CM without any official or political reason. Why???….. What is so intimate and so heart touching love story with China?!?!?!?!?…

entire baniya fraternity buying from china, loading high margin and selling... India has become some kind of dumping ground for chinese low quality products, consumer cheated, traders making high profits... I bought a prestige kettle thinking that it will be an indian product... after unpacking, it was known that it is made in china. already spoilt and not working... i emailed prestige company for authorised repair centre, they gave vague answers...

kb r mangalore, you are not the only and last one who buy such and other materials today to know the quality of this or other .True what you say.Even electronics we buy here too are ,made there ,and joined here. Many companies here realised what is going on and they have decided to produce her.Fact is that here producing costs per hour is higher .Thatswhy in China is cheaper. But cheaper one has its quality too so.When govt.looks into it and decide to produce in own country ,than elsewhere people here too would get jobs.Cheaper quality gets spoiled soon ,so have to buy next.Thas the idea.Whole world is filled with cheaper plastic which becomes now problem. Each one of us should realise this and look for alternative to reduce plastic.mostly foreign made.?)

Dear kbr, Mangalore, You are right. It is not baniya problem, entire India problem, when it comes to buy cheap and sell at high margin. I met this guy from Singapore who was selling crucial solution involved in Setup box. He just could not do any business in India because, whomsoever he met here, did not want to invest in something that could not invest today and harvest profit tomorrow. He finally had to find a manufacturer of setup box in Taiwan, for which he had to find a HW provider in China in which he installed his solution and gave this potential seller in India the setup box in fully manufactured form which he had to just sell. It has to do with lack of understanding and vision also. We are used to investing today and getting profit from very next day, with zero appetite for risk. Taking losses is unfortunately/understandably not part of our DNA.

The trade deficit is still in favor of China. Despite being world's factory, China is very protective of its domestic market and this trade deficit is partly due to that. We failed to protect our textile manufacturers, while China is very protective of its Pharma & Service industry and does not provide India free access to those markets. Indian pharma companies double up as world's third world pharmacy and also sell some generics in the US market. They form a significant part of India's exports that depend heavily on cheap APIs imported from China and that is a risk. Indian pharma must diversify their imports including encouraging local players to take up those production. Moreover, India and World's infinite appetite for cheap stuff means, trade will be healthy between the 2 countries and it is in a way good, because stakes are high for China when it comes to its engagement at the border.
