Bengaluru, Jan 31: A policeman who kicked a handicapped woman in full public glare in the road and thrashed her after getting angry at her for throwing a stone at him for towing her vehicle away, has been suspended from service. City traffic division joint police commissioner, Dr B R Ravikanthe Gowda, issued the suspension order. The suspended policeman happens to be Narayan, assistant sub-inspector of Halasuru Gate traffic police station.

After the said incident, the police had also registered a first information report against the woman for obstructing a policeman on duty and assault.

There have been complaints that the police are not announcing by loudspeakers before towing vehicles as per rules, vehicles kept in places that are not no parking zones are also towed away, private staff taking away vehicles at will to enhance the fine amount in connivance with the police, illegal imposition of fines and the image of the city police getting dented for wrong things.

An investigation has been ordered into an incident in which a delivery boy is seen running behind the stowing staff, begging them to release his vehicle. He was seen repeatedly requesting them to release the vehicle as he would face heavy financial losses. When towing the two-wheeler away, parcels were seen falling on the road but the police did not care. The towing vehicle concerned has been kept under suspension relating to the said incident which happened within Jeevan Bima Nagar traffic police station limits.

A meeting is being chaired by the chief minister with the presence of the police commissioner, director general of police and traffic police officers on Monday to examine the system of towing and bring changes if any as may be found desirable to make the system more humane and efficient. The CM has noted that the issue of atrocities on the people after the towing system was entrusted to private operators needs to be reviewed. Police commissioner, Kamal Pant, has already instructed the police involved with the towing system not to behave rudely with the people.
