Mangaluru, Feb 7: “India got independence from the British rule 75 years ago. However, today the country is in dire straits. There is urgent need to rebuild the country. Congress is needed for this purpose. That is why Congress president Sonia Gandhi has started membership campaign for the party,” said D K Shivakumar, president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

Shivakumar spoke to media at the international airport here on Monday February 7. He further said, “Election of block and district officer bearers of the party is scheduled to be held shortly. If anyone registers their membership, they will be given the right to vote. We have recruited one chief registrar for every 40 booths. This will help in seeking the opinion of members while providing tickets for coming elections. The feelings of Congress workers should be the feelings of president of the party. We have started digital membership in order to facilitate online opinion of workers with regards to the leaders of the party.

“Those who believe in the ideology of Congress and the leadership of the party can become member by paying Rs five. Those who want to get ID card can do so by paying Rs 10 at district Congress office. I am visiting Mangaluru and Udupi in order to meet chief registrars and distributes booths to them and also hold discussion,” he said.

On the raging controversy over hijab, he said, “Row over hijab is making huge noise in coastal districts. The work of BJP is to mock and tease Congress all the time. Their job is to create disturbance in state and country among the children. They are doing this right from the inception of the party. I will hold a press conference and give my opinion in this regard.”
