No manufacturing in India, no tax relief, says Govt on Tesla

New Delhi, Feb 9 (IANS): The government on Tuesday questioned electric car company Tesla's business practices, of seeking tax breaks to use the Indian market to sell its products, but not wanting to set up manufacturing facilities in the country which can generate thousands of jobs.

"We can't grant subsidies or relaxation in taxes to the said company as they don't want to set-up their manufacturing and other operation bases here. Why should we favour a company which creates jobs in China and mints profit from our markets? Our Prime Minister has a vision for all such foreign companies, if you want to sell your product in our country, then manufacture them here only," Minister of State for Heavy Industries Krishna Pal Gujjar told the Lok Sabha in response to a question by Shiv Sena member Vinayak Bhaurao Raut.

Raut had asked what kind of relaxation in taxes is the government is planning to grant the electric car giant, so that they can start their manufacturing in various states here as announced.

The minister informed the house that Tesla hasn't shown any interest in any of the government's schemes for electric vehicles.

"The said company has not participated in any of our schemes, and that cleared their intentions that Tesla only wants to exploit our market to mint profit, but will refrain from setting up manufacturing units here. If they manufacture their electric cars in China, thousands of jobs will be created there, not for Indian youths here," he said.

As per the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the government has formulated a scheme, Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme in 2015 to promote the adoption of electric/hybrid vehicles (EVs) in the country with an aim to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

At present, Phase-II of FAME India Scheme is being implemented for a period of 5 years with effect from April 12, 019 with total budgetary support of Rs 10,000 crore.

Also, GST on electric vehicles has been reduced from 12 per cent to 5 per cent, and on chargers/charging stations for electric vehicles from 18 per cent to 5 per cent.

Ford came and left, The reason is loss, They opened manufacturing unit, But couldn't succeed in getting into India market even though they had fantastic products. I think Government first need to understand the technical aspects before blindly putting the tax. Government only knows how to get the money from people but not knowing how to use it.

..do you know how much TATA MOTORS sales jumped and their shares jumped in the past 4-5 years..the MAHINDRA captured full SUV market..so, its not Govt fault, its FORD product lines, services, price, service which impacts sales not taxation..if Txaation issue then HUNDAI may not be second largest company in INDIA..Problem with TESLA is , they produce in China & sell in India..what we get!..its like pakistan CPEC..even labours coming from China, pakistan paying interest on loan only..

Mr Hussain ford didn't fail because of the govt but because of their own department. Since they came to the Indian market they have given the same cars figo aspire eco sport. Nothing is new. Look at their competition who brings variety of cars. in Indian market people care about price safety is secondary here. That's why suzuki has sky high sales even with ncap 1star rating compared to fords vehicles which have a average of 4stars. Tesla will be a hit if it comes to the Indian market everyone knows that why should we only be in receiving end? If he can manufacture in China why not India? We are almost in a war like situation with China and are still dependent on them for trade what's the problem in trying to reduce this?

What went wrong? According to industry experts, Ford didn't read the Indian market properly. The carmaker didn't customise the car platforms and the product strategy too was not correct. For a quite long time, small cars have ruled the Indian market. While Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai aced the market by focusing on small cars, Ford or General Motors failed to do so. None of these car brands had small cars in their global portfolio. They didn't customise their India product strategy according to the local market preference as well.
