Sangeet Sardar Wilson Olivera Weaves Magic with 30th Musical Nite

Mangalore, Jan 10: The eagerly awaited “Sangeet Sardar” Wilson Olivera’s 30th musical nite was held at St Agnes Special School grounds here on Sunday January 9 amidst much fanfare.
The event evoked enthusiastic response from Konkani music lovers who assembled in large numbers to relish the musical evening. Wilson, who has 5 music albums to his credit including the recently released 5th album “Tuvem Gaytana” entertained the crowd along with his music group with a variety of melodious numbers ranging from romantic duets to sentimental songs including a tribute song to his mentor Konkann Kogull the late Wilfy Rebimbus. There was another song in the form of a tribute to the victims of the Mangalore Air Crash of last year. The musical nite was organized by Alfred Benis.
All the songs sang at the nite were written by Konkani Manik Wilson Olivera who also sang many songs with his team of singers consisting of Prakash D'Souza, Prakash Madevan, Zeena Pereira, Babitha Pinto, Joseph Mathias and Pradeep Pinto doing justice to the songs penned by him.
Olivera and his team of singers gave a musical feast of 15 Konkani numbers by him, some of which are already popular among the Konkani speaking people. Konkani Sardar Olivera’s compositions on diverse themes gave an ample indication of his talent and hold over language apart from his beautiful and melodious renditions. With over 800 compositions to his credit over the years, Wilson Olivera has carved out a niche in the Konkani music field as a meaningful composer.
‘Memory’ team provided the comedy element at the show and Mandd Sobhann’s dance group grooved to some of the numbers sung at the nite. Entertainment part also included bodybuilding show by former Mr World Raymond D'Souza who flexed his body muscles to the tunes of the hit Alisha Chinai number ‘Made in India’.
The musical evening began with Wilson and group singing “Dhavon Aylan” soon followed by “Chandnem Udelam” sung by Prakash D'Souza. Prakash Mahadevan then teamed up with another bubbling singer Zeena Pereira to present the number “Kirak Peracho”. Wilson, whose melodious voice is often compared to the late Wilfy Rebimbus, paid a rich tribute to his mentor and Konkani legend through the song “Tuven Gaytana”, specially composed for the late Wilfy and sung by Wilson Olivera.
Wilson Olivera also payed a special tribute to the victims of Air India crash of Mangalore, along with the pictures of the terrible tragedy on the screen, which welled the eyes of the assembled people.
Joseph Mathias showcased his singing talent by singing “Bombaichem Chedum”, a fast number just like the fast-phased life of people in Mumbai city. Pradeep Pinto filled life to Olivera’s lyrics by singing ‘Moja Jivanth” and Babita Pinto gave a tell-tale rendering of the lives of women whose husbands work in the Gulf for eking out a living.
Another heart-rending sentimental number “mamma” was sung by Pradeep Pinto. Prakash D'Souza teamed up with Babita to sing a duet number “Sorgacha Bukacher” and Babith Pereira sang a hilarious number “Novro Sodge’, that sent a chuckle on the faces of the enthusiastic crowd. “London nahi”, another fast number was a taunt for girls who flaunt they bodies and go half dressed in the name of fashion. Finally Prakash Mahadevan sang “Galanncher Thambsan Kashi”, before Wilson and his team once again came to the stage with the final song of the day “dev borem karun”.
Musical nite was preceded by a stage programme with Fr Andres Leo D'Souza, Parish priest of St Joseph’s Church, Jeppu, presiding over the show. Fr John Vas, Parish Priest of St Ann’s Church, Kelrai, was the chief guest. Joseph Mathias, Audy Rego, Ozzy D'Souza and Walter Nandalike were the guests of honour.
In the same venue Walter Nandalike, editor-in-chief of daijiworld.com inaugurated the website “Seekers H R Consultants”, of Felix Moral, Anjelore.
The organizers of the Olivera Nite felicitated former Mr World Raymond D'Souza on the occasion. Circle Inspector of Paranmbur Velantine D'Souza honoured him by presenting a shawl. Walter Nandalike presented a memento to Raymond D'Souza and Ozzy D'Souza presented him with a bouquet.
The musical nite was conducted and directed by sangeet guru Joel Pereira. He was ably supported by musicians like Damodar Kumble on tabla, base guitar Ashit Pinto, drummer Sachin Sequeira, Theo Alvares on trumpet and lead guitar by Roshan D'Souza, Anjelore.
The musical show was compered by Ronald Olivera, younger brother of Wilson Olivera. The stage programme was compered by Vincent Mendonca.
Reymond D'Cunha Thakode welcomed the gathering and also proposed the vote of thanks.
It was a memorable evening for all those who had come to take part in the musical nite and Olivera and his dedicated team of singers gave the Konkani music aficionados an evening to cherish.
