Chennai, Aug 20: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at SIMS Hospital, Chennai, have successfully treated a young IT professional diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) – a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer.

According to the hospital, the disease had severely damaged the patient’s scalp and skull, necessitating a complex and multidisciplinary surgical intervention.

The team of specialists first performed a skull reconstruction after removing the cancerous tumour. The patient’s scalp was then repaired in multiple stages using a combination of skin grafts, flaps, and tissue expanders. For the final phase, a piece of tissue was harvested from the patient’s thigh to complete the reconstruction.

In addition, doctors also removed a metastatic nodule from the lung during the procedure, ensuring comprehensive cancer management.

Hospital authorities said the successful surgery highlights SIMS Hospital’s advanced expertise in handling rare and challenging cancer cases, giving new hope to patients battling complex medical conditions.
