Bangalore, Jan 14: Two of Vatican’s Prelates – Cardinal William Joseph Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Roman Curia and Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio to India – will be participating in a week-long Colloquium of Bishops and Theologians in Bangalore from January 16.

Cardinal Levada, who was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as his own successor in the post of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, will be accompanied by important officials from the Roman Curia in his first-ever visit to Bangalore after his elevation to the top-ranking position in the Roman Catholic Church.

Cardinal Levada has the distinction of serving as the Principal Editor of the Catechism of the Catholic Church when Pope Benedict XVI held the post of the Prefect. He is also the President of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, the International Theological Commission and the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei.

Cardinal Levada was appointed among the first members of the newly created Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation as recently as on January 5, 2011.

Archbishop Pennacchio was appointed Nuncio to India on May 8, 2010, will also be making his first visit to Bangalore.

To mark the presence of Vatican’s two top Prelates in the city, the Bangalore Archdiocese under the leadership of Archbishop Bernard Moras has organized a formal felicitation function at the newly constructed Paalanaa Bhavana, the Archidocesan Pastoral Centre, on January 21 at 4 pm starting with a short prayer service.

Cardinal Levada along with all the other Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops will be offering a solemn Pontifical High Mass at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral Grounds on January 23, Sunday, at 8.30 am, and would be imparting the Apostolic blessings to the faithful.

''It is indeed a happy coincidence that the Archdiocese’s Catechism Day is being celebrated at the Cathedral on January 23 with the participation of over 1000 children from different parishes in the Archdiocese,” remarked Archbishop Bernard Moras.

Cardinal Levada, born on June 15m 1936, had earlier served as Archbishop of Portland (Oregon) from 1986 to 1995 and as Archbishop of San Francisco from 1995 to 2005. He was named as the Cardinal-Deacon of Santa Maria in Dominica on March 24, 2006.

Archbishop Pennacchio has served in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Panama, Ethiopia, Australia, Turkey, Egypt, Yogoslavia and Ireland. He was also the Apostolic Nuncio to Rwanda and was later appointed in the same position in Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia. He was the Apostolic Delegate in Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia and Brunei before his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio to India.

    1) Welcome Vatican Prelates to Bangalore. Wish you a very spirit filled mission.
2)Thanks Mr. Gladson Brahmavar for sensible comments. A healthy discussion will enhance strong brotherly ties among us.
3)Mr. Felix F., India/Ksa, nothing wrong in referring Infant Jesus as Baby God, but, referring Infant Jesus with Bala Krishna is totally unacceptable and senseless. May Prince of Peace bless us all.

Well said Gadson, even it is written in Bible on James Chapter 2: 19..."You believe that there is one God.Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder"...So it is clear as you said only faith in one God doesn't work. Faith by action is very very impotant...Love your God with all your Heart, Mind and Soul and Love your neighbour as yourself...this is what Jesus said those who want to be his desciple

Gladson, while thanking you for your thought provoking comments, I totally agree with your views, Religion that believes in numbers of devotees is a curse to peaceful living and can never co-exist with humanity. Its religious heads and followers live often in fools' paradise where heaven is somewhere up above amidst the countless galaxies rather here on earth amidst God's supreme creation, HUMANITY. The need of the hour is not an increase in number of Christians, Hindus, Muslims etc but increase in number those who believe in universal religion called HUMANITY, supreme command called LOVE and those who see Real God in their neighbours.

Please read the appeal of Fr. Clifford to the devotees gathered to celebrate feast of Infant Jesus at Bikarnakatte. - We should make efforts to experience Jesus and live a life fitting to our call once we experience Jesus our life will be changed,” he said. He also said that meeting and experiencing Jesus Christ will help us to worship one God.

According to his statement, I understand that Catholics are not worshipping ONE God.? Where as your views says Universal religion called Humanity, in which I belive too. But there should be a authority like the Pope or Bishop who will direct the people towards one thought of truth, instead of multiple thoughts.

Felix, strange comment and unique concern! Any religion that is not open to times and lingers in the past is like opium. It's dangerous to spiritual health as well as social life. You call it Bala Krishna or Infant Jesus, does that add or subtract anything from the tenants of the religion or would it help one to live a better humane life? And the worry that becoming unaware of Real God is quite hilarious too. Every person who does not know as who is his neighbour will never know Real God either. Religion that believes in numbers of devotees is a curse to peaceful living and can never co-exist with humanity. Religion that teaches only the verticle growth leads either to heaven or hell but any religion that teaches the horizontal growth leads to harmonious living, peaceful co-existence and unsuspected trust and faith in God and His creation.

I hope the Bishops will give a unified religious code to Catholics in India. So that there will be a unified prayer to one God.

Indian Catholics have taken religion in their own hands, and do their own interpretations of spiritual matters, like for example, in one comment on the Infant Jesus feast, Infant Jesus was referred to as Baby God. And one comment referred to Infant Jesus as Bala Krishna.

To some Catholics Mother mary is the Mother of God, and some are devotees of their saints.

If this habbit continues, the future generation of Cathoics will be totally unaware of who the Real God is .?
