Mangalore: State-wide Bandh Call Evokes Total Response in City

Mangalore, Jan 22: The state BJP has given a call for bandh on Saturday January 22, in protest against the historic move by Karnataka Governor, H R Bhardwaj, in giving clearance to two advocates to file suit against the Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa, in respect of various allegations including nepotism and land scam, levelled against the latter. The timing of the Governor’s move, which was expected since the last some days, took the state BJP by surprise, as it thought that the decision might come by the middle of next week.

A livid state BJP president, K S Eshwarappa, lost no time in announcing that the party has decided to give a call for state bandh on Saturday. In the meanwhile, primary and secondary education minister, Vishweswhar Hegde Kageri, said that the officials of the department have been instructed to take a decision depending on local situations.

In both Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, district units of the BJP have supported the bandh call. Dakshina Kannada district BJP president, Padmanabha Kottary, city unit president, Srikar Prabhu, and Udupi district BJP president, K Udayakumar Shetty, have requested the people to voluntarily observe bandh against the Governor’s unilateral decision today. They have said that vehicles carrying milk, food items, medicines, vehicles of hospitals, and those connected with auspicious functions, will be exempt from the bandh call.

In both Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, schools and high schools will remain closed today. While Dakshina Kannada deputy director of public instructions, Chame Gowda, issued this order, additional deputy commissioner, Prabhakar, declared holiday in Udupi district.

Superintendents of police of the twin-districts have said that they do not expect any untoward incidents to happen, as this is a voluntary bandh. However, they said, patrolling and security is being beefed to face any eventuality. Contingents of policemen have been deployed at strategic places all over the city and elsewhere in the two districts.

President of City Bus Owners Association and  secretary of Canara Bus Owners Association, Bhaskar Salian, said that buses will move as usual in both the districts. Udupi district Merchants Association president, Sahanasheela Pai, said that the merchants in the district will be extending wholehearted support for the bandh call, as the Governor has not acted impartially, as expected of him.

The programmes of the minister, V S Acharya in Udupi for today, stand cancelled.

The city is wearing a deserted look since today morning, as buses and auto rickshaws have gone off the road, in spite of what the association of bus owners claimed. Only a handful of buses including some KSRTC buses, were seen moving around the city, which were woefully inadequate, considering large crowds seen waiting at various bus stops. People are also seen walking to their destinations, and those who arrived from different  cities late through night buses, were seen struggling to reach their destinations with heavy luggage, as the number of auto rickshaws plying in the city, is also very meagre.

Such diverging views from our readers. Congress - BJP, BJP - Congress. When we the educated people pool our scarce intellectual thoughts and put to use in the right direction. 63 years and it has gone bad to worse irrespective of parties. Lets reform the system through awareness and support people like IPS officer Kiran Bedi and the likes.

In India all the political parties are the same. All are chors and are least bothered about the general public. Last week near my house two elderly people were talking and saying that previous british govt was atleast little better than our present central and state govts. Even i agree to their point to some extent.

I will ask Mr.Satish Kunder,As per you Yeddy is Corrupt Chief Minister. As this proved in Court of law or he grabbed some of your personnel things? You are not the decision maker whether Yeddy is corrupt or not. There is Court of Law, which we have to believe. If Court proves he is corrupt then give your statement.

Satish Kunder, Mangalore/Kuwait i think if your congress had held this type of protest i think you would have definately appreciated them. The congress is behaving as if they have not done any crime so far. The congress seems to be worried more about BJP rather than the actual enemies of this country. That's why congress UPA govt is treating terrorists in a very good way and they are enjoying the hospitality which our country is giving to them.

It is really pathetic that people have to pay for the sins commited by the chief minister. Goondas are taking full liberty of the situation and cause further loss to the tax payers. Further we are potraying ourselves as illiterate and iresponible and the entire world is watching our drama. Karnataka political Drama is shameful and never ending. UPA must impose President Rule for Karnataka at least for one year.

Bundh was really a foolish thing on karnataka people's part. by this we can really feel that people are supporting the culprit CM. the people who carried outbundh was only the young people who r roadroamious by pulling the people and destroying the public property by burning buses in which we pay taxes for govt. really people of karnataka are behaving like fools and causing inconveince to the general public from far away places for work here. even there was nothing to eat for the people as hotels were forced to shut down by the idiot BJP supporters. it is really shame on the people of Karnataka as allthe major IT co's r thinking of shifting there base outside of B'lore bcoz of the GOvt.

time in history that the CM of a
State is ordering his State for
a "bundh". For this action, he

It is surprising to see the comments of BJP supporters here.

Here we have a chief minister who is most corrupt and is working for the upliftment of his sons and family at the cost of this state. Does he to be honoured or punished for these misdeeds?

This is the state sponsored bandh to protect the thieves and it is unfortunate that BJP is blindly supporting these thieves.

There is nothing like a voluntary or peaceful bandh. It is always forced on the people who are not willing to participate in the bandh. The success of a bandh to the organisers is known by the number of buses burnt, vehicles damaged, shops looted, inconvenience caused to the common man especially the daily wage worker. The more the loss, the greater the success as per the people who call for the bandh. After this bandh, while the organisers will claim that it was totally successful, have they achieved their true objective? Will the governor withdraw his order? If not, what have we achieved? I foresee more bandhs when the actual prosecution process starts! The people who claim to love their motherland and uphold the law of the land, do so only when it suits them. When it does not suit them, they will take the law in their own hands!

Who is this Srikar Prabhu or Udaya Kumar shetty to request people to voluntarily observe Bundh against Governer's decision. These thieves are asking public to shield their leader who is "Maha Chor". These people are destroying public property on the pretex of bundh and terrorising in the soceity. Put them behind the bars as they are responsible for this unrest and damage. No one is allowed to behave himself above the law. Break them if they break them if they try to break law. Make them responsible for all those loss to nation and arrest them immediately and show them the taste of lathi so that in future they should not play with the sentiments of people. People of this country are tired by taking this people all the time and now the time has come to focus on our own livelihood and eradicate these nonsense people from our country.

Governor has had done duty. Law should be same for all people, whether it is congress or BJP. Let the truth come outside from inquiry, why Chief Minister worried about that, if he is clean hand. Many people are thinking that, every politician is making money when they come to power, so there is nothing wrong in BJP politics also. They don’t know they are all looting our public money. To be frank, Daskhina Kannda people are not bothered about the state o and central politics. here they thinks that, current political system can't be corrected. Some people said Congress and Governor is responsible for current difficulties, does it mean that permission should not be given whatever BJP do?.

No point in blaming them we should blame our self for electing them. The corruption has reached to such level all politicians knows that nothing will happened to them due to our weak law system . Congress or BJP will never change law what’s ever it may be. The only thing what I foresee is civil unrest through out the country like we had during pre-independence period. Policeman in our country has becomes slaves of politician even the top cops highly educated ones too. God only save this country.
