Mangalore: ‘Cases against Minorities to be Withdrawn Soon’

Mangalore, Mar 24 (DHNS): High Court retired Judge Justice Michael F Saldanha said that Governor H R Bharadwaj has recommended the government to withdraw 338 false cases filed against the victims of church attacks, particularly belonging to minority community within a month.

Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, he said that Home Minister Ashok has already confirmed that the withdrawl will be done within few days.

Stating that he had presented ‘People’s Enquiry Tribunal Report’ on the atrocities committed against minorities to the Prime Minister, Vice-Presidemt Hamid Ansari, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Law Minister Veerappa Moily, Minister for Minorities Salman Khurshid and Governor H R Bharadwaj, Justice Saldanha said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has given special assurance to the citizens of the State that the Central government will ensure the welfare and security of all citizens particularly those belonging to the minorities and the weaker sections of the coastal Karnataka.

He said that Vice-President Hamid Ansari expressed deep regret  over the use of violence against the minorities and particularly their places of worship and that it will be effectively curtailed.

On his meeting with Home Minister P Chidambaram, Justice Saldanha said that the Union Home Minister was concerned about the security in the coastal region and that it needs to be stepped up both externally as well as internally so that the life of people living in the region improves. He has even assured that if required, Central forces would be deployed to safeguard the interests of the minorities, as was done in Mysore, Saldanha said.

Minorities Minister Salman Khurshid had come out strongly against communal violence perpetrated by police, state administration and communal elements. He stated that his Ministry will go all out to enforce the Constituional guarantees and combat human rights infringements, Justice Saldanha added.

Justice Saldanha said that 12,817 persons belonging to minority communities were arrested across Karnataka with regard to the church attacks. However, the cases registered against the ‘organisations’ were withdrawn by citing the reason that they were ‘political activists.’

    Ashok - Dubai,
You have completely lost your mind or your upper chamber is not working on account of working in the desert country. You are not at all aware of the crimes committed by the Police in connivance with Bajrang Dal on defenceless christians or may be you dont want to know about.

Police have not gone inside the garbagudi of your temple to desecrate the holy place. Police have not gone to lathi charge poor women who were inside your temple. Police have not used tear gas (expired) on poor people who protested the desecration and damaged an eye permanently of one the women. No SP came to your temple to book false cases on 18 youngsters who were innocent and have suffered mentally and physically. So what is your problem if an active Human Rights Activist like Justice Saladhan is fighting for justice. Please answer

    Dear Mr. Shivanand Shetty, Mangalore/Bangalore/USA,
Obviously I think you are a learned person living in the 21st century that too in the USA. I have no objection in what you worship or what not you worship. Humans have freedom to utilize and act as per ones rationale mind. Now kindly utilize your rationale mind and tell me if each and everything are gods to whom a person can worship? If the reptiles, animals, the stone, the birds and the fish are gods, we the humans are bigger gods than those irrational creatures.

At this state of affairs should your worship belong, to the sun, the moon , the stars or the nature? Sun, moon, stars and the nature obtain its own characteristics which cannot exceed in its limitations. If we worship the reptiles, the animals, the fish, which have its own characteristics and we humans find its limitations.

A monkey will do only monkey tricks, a reptile will crawl and bite, a fish will be in the water only and the nature will balance the environment with its limits which cannot exceed nor decrease. Humans are partial minded, sinners then we have to worship God who is sinless, faultless, the Holy one, the truthful and the one who is truthful in its judgments. Kindly think over if you are a learned person of the 21st century to whom the worship and praises should go. Think of in-depth and may God bless you.

If you believe someone is into illegal conversion, then you are free to prove it and protest against it in a proper manner and get justice. You can not imagine something or falsely accuse someone to achieve your political goals and indulge into violent and destructive activities which is illegal and condemnable in a civilised society. By the way there are some Swamijis of our country who go abroad, brain wash the westerners and get them converted. This is legal or illegal conversion?

Cases were filed against the people who protested against the criminals attacking churches and against police brutality while you have let loose the actual criminals and the police who were supposed to be impartial but connived with the culprits and acted on the innocent protesters. Have you not questioned at that time as to why this differential treatment and two sets of rules for two different communities were followed?
Mr.M.F.Saldanha is doing this service voluntarily to his community as their representative when people on duty have let us down and no one is preventing you from doing so.

Dear Mr.M Bhat why are you mixing religion with good works of Saldhana, but for you information

In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count).

Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During some Ash Wednesday services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers.

Not all Christian churches observe Ash Wednesday or Lent. They are mostly observed by the Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Anglican denominations, and also by Roman Catholics. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

The Bible does not mention Ash Wednesday or the custom of Lent, however, the practice of repentance and mourning in ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19 Esther 4:1 Job 2:8 Daniel 9:3 and Matthew 11:21.

Thankyou Justice Saldana for bringing the true picture on Church attacks. You have spoken the truth on these attacks as you were not influenced by the Chief Minister or any BJP leaders. You report on church attacks is exactly the contrary of Justice Somashekara report. I feel your report carries more weightage than Justice Somas report as your report is a factual report where as Justice Soma has supressed so many facts.Thankyou for taking the initiative on behalf of our community and meeting so many delegations at the centre so that there is no denial of justice to our community. Justice Somashekara has failed to identify the perpetrators of this henious crime where as your report has pinpointed the organisations and associations in these attacks and also the role of the police force in these attacks. I sincerly believe that the authorities at the centre will rely heavily on your report and give justice to our community.

A right step indeed by eminent jurist Justice Saldanha. All this dharnas and protests meets donot help and would generate a mere local level publicity. That is, we read our own news. In order that our voice be heard in the corridors of power we should do what Justice Saldanha has done. I donot think so far any body has done the way he has done. The people in power religious or otherwise usually take a phone and talk to their classmate minister, district minister, batchmate minister or a freind minister who agrees to all that you say but does not deliver a word. We feel satisfied as long as we allowed to speak in front of 50,000 people we think we have served the cause. because we get happiness from the fact that 50,000 strong people is at our command.
A systematic aproach with government only works and it is immaterial that how many people gather for protest. Can anyone tell what is the outcome of protest against Justice Somasekhara Comission report. Everywhere we are experts in convining our own people. its like asking people to believe in God who already believe in Him. 'Religion is in fact opium of the masses'
