Mangalore: CFL Bulbs to Families to Save Power – Kapil Mohan

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 18: “The union government has been spending about Rs 6,000 crore for saving power. It has been supplying CFL bulbs at the rate of Rs 15 per bulb to families having power connection. In Karnataka, this scheme will come in force within the next two months,” said Kapil Mohan, deputy director general in the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, New Delhi.

He was speaking to reporters during his visit to Kateel Goddess Durgaparameshwari Temple on Sunday April 17.

“At present, each CFL bulb costs between Rs 120 and 140. They will be supplied to each family at the said rate, in exchange for used 60 and 40 watts bulbs. This scheme has already been implemented in Kerala. Shortly, this scheme will come into force all over the country,” he explained.

He added that the union government wants to save energy without seeking recourse to power cuts, and through alternative methods to save it. Searching for alternative sources of energy, and making changes in the way we use energy, are the initiatives aimed at achieving this objective, he revealed. He added that a meeting with important companies is being held in Mangalore on Monday in this connection.

This was expected coming from a politician but from the Dy director General in the Bureau of Energy Efficiency,New Delhi it is a shock to me.
To be told that every CFL bulb costs between Rs 120 and 140 and then going to be given to the Aaam Aadmi at Rs 15 means the difference is going to be borne by the Govt/ from our taxes.
This is another scandal in the making.
CFL 20W bulbs bought singularly in retail may cost this much- remove the 30 pct margin given to the dealer/distributor and another 10 pct for transport, handling, etc etc but if bought in bulk and that too directly from a manufacture the cost will closer to 50 pct of the market price.
Well who will get the carbon credits for such changeover to CFL- the carbon credits are worth a lot and that too in foreign exchange if sold commercially the price of the CFL will get further reduced. I understand that a manufacturer had made a proposal to the Orissa Govt of free exchange of CFL for Incandicent bulbs if they given the benefits of carbon credits, no central or state taxes, etc etc on them.
So what is this "thousands of crores" being spent by the union government.
It is a farce that needs thorough investigation & full and total transparency.
Have we not been fooled enough by the politicians & berauocrats.
