Bagalkot: Boy falls into 300-feet deep borewell, rescue efforts on

Updated

Bagalkot, Aug 3 (PTI): A massive rescue operation is underway to lift a six-year-old boy who fell into a borewell Sunday at a village in north Karnataka.

The tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m. at Sulikere near Badami in this district, about 550.km from the state’s capital Bangalore.

"The boy (Thimanna) suddenly fell into the borewell while playing with his brother and friends in the village. His father got it dug up but abandoned as it had no water even at 240 feet depth," district in-charge minister S.R. Patil told reporters at the mishap spot.

According to the victim’s friends, however, Thimanna went to the spot to show his cousin where the borewell was dug and how deep it was but plunged into it as it was not fenced and soil around it was slippery.

As the rescue team noticed some movement of the boy’s hands at a depth of 160 feet through a powerful closed circuit television (CCTV) camera connected to a laptop, oxygen is being supplied since 4 p.m. through a long pipe to ensure he will breathe and stay alive as long.

“Two earth-moving machines and one drilling machine are digging a well up to 170 feet parallel to the borewell and make a passage to reach the boy for recuing him alive,” Patil said camping at the spot with district officials and fire brigade men.

A 10-member expert team from the state-run Hutti Gold Mines in Raichur district, about 200km away from here, rushed to the spot with additional equipment and searchlights for stepping up the rescue operation through the night despite inclement weather and intermittent rain since evening.

"A six-member team of the National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) is on way from Bangalore by flight to Bellary to reach here on road at the earliest. We have also asked Manje Gowda, a well-known robot expert, to reach the spot for rescuing the boy," Patil, a cabinet minister for IT and biotechnology, said.

An ambulance has been kept ready to rush the boy to the state-run district hospital after retrieving him from the deep hole.

About 2,000 people from Sulikere and surrounding villages in this backward district are camping at the spot, watching the rescue efforts under powerful searchlights.

Meanwhile, hundreds of village folks joined the boy's family in praying for his life in local temples, while his friends are worried over Thimanna's fate.

just see the opening it looks so small so the ignorant villagers must have though nobody will fall. most of the villagers are illiterate and having access to internet is a far away thought we know of these thing becos we read news in papers and internet. we people who are aware of such things should educate those who do not know so that nobody especially children do not suffer because of carelessness.

How many people bothered about if drainage hole is opened near by your house or oard and how many are going to complaint to municipality by calling them while going to work?
This India ,here some one has to die,and some one has to be killed in road to introduce a hump or road signal or some one has to get raped to bring changes in law and safety about children many more.
other wise it is konana mundhe kindari barisadahage.

It is responsibility of the owner of the land to close the open bore well and not responsibility of the government to check their land. Even if it is public place anybody can keep one stone on open bore well to avoid such type of tragedy instead of blame game after tragedy. We noticed similar type of tragedy happened sometimes ago in Bijapur but still people are sleeping (either driller or owner).

Request people For god Sake do not keep borewells open because innocent children die because of our carelessness. All people in the village should see that the borewells are properly fenced or closed if not operations. this is very very important.

People’s negligence and carelessness leads to all such disasters and loss of human lives.

I hope the efforts exerted by the rescue team would yield some positive result.

The owners of the bore well be should be made to bear the cost incurred in such a massive operation, so that the rest of the lot would learn a lesson.

this is not a first incident.. the similar things happened before.. rescue is not the solution.. the borewell owners must cover the bore well with hard barricades and warning signs. violators must be punished with heavy fines or cancellation of licence.

Mr.Ismail Perinje, you are saying the same of what I am saying too. Only speeches to keep active the media people and to get publicity. Take a walk on foot path around AXIS Bank near Bunts Hostel. The holes are so big a child's leg will be caught in it. One of these days a Child's Leg will be caught and,or a bike will tip over killing the rider. I have informed MCC office and spoke to Corp. Vinayraj regarding this since 2 months or more. But still not a single thing is done. They are all waiting for some tragedy and then every official will show up at site with ONE LAKH rupees in hand for show of that He or She is very concerned person. Sad it is to live in this city.

Why family members are so ignorant? They all knew about this very well I believe, yet they didn't take safety measures. Moreover it is very less expensive to close it.
The case should be filed against borewell diggers.

Not sure why some of the commentators are blaming the Govt. This Borewell was in the field owned by his father. Is it not the responsibility of the parents/elders to make sure their Kids are safe in the home and the surroundings. Indians basically lack safety culture and unless there is a awareness about risk kids will be falling in borewells and sumps.

Local administration should be held responsible for this horror.

At the same time locals should know consequences of these open wells and they could have kept something on the top of this hole with some sign without waiting for others to do as usual our mentality.

Useless State Government. Almost all of its Ministers Sleep in Assembly, & our Pseudos keep chanting it is better to sleep than watching porn.

It looks like even after repeated incidents, it has not learnt lesson. Cautions is required to instruct the Borewell rigging companies or at the time of issuing permission to close the wells if found useless, & never to keep it open as trap.

The operator/ owner of the bore well machine itself should take the responsibility to cover the face of the particular dug bore well. they should have a ready made cover with them, soon after boring work they should cover it. the licensing authority should take immediate action on this matter.

Since 45 days I have been trying to close a open well on middle of Main Road. Made five calls,Visited DC office once, and met a official of MCC near the well 8 days back. Still now no action, may be they are waiting for a Child to fall and die. Then they will visit the site and family with ONE LAKH Rupees in hand with a publicity stunt.

    Whetever you said is correct.
Government urgently need to take survey of all the open wells, borewells etc and let public know how many of them still danger.
Also issue strict guidelines to everybody, flash that news in tv instead of some less important news.
Use school teachers to do survey, since children are the victims.
