Emirates crash-landing: Rush for hand baggage and racist comments !

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru/Dubai

Mangalore / Dubai, Aug 5 : In a surprising revelation that has lately come to light, some of the Indian passengers who were aboard the Emirates Flight EK521, which was flying from Thiruvananthapuram, crash-landed and caught fire, instead of hurrying to get down from the plane to save themselves as well as others, preferred to take hand luggage first and then deboard !

During this process, a passenger inside the plane filmed a video showing people screaming and rushing to get their luggage.

This video was shared by a flight attendant from another airline company on their Facebook timeline with a caption that referred to the Indian passengers as "f***ing rats" and "stupid" for trying to get to their baggage instead of evacuating.

This incident may not not get world-wide attention, but surely will not go down well with the fellow Indian community worldwide.

There are a number of occasions (rather every trip) from Dubai to Mangaluru or Mangaluru to Dubai when one can see some of the passengers removing the seat-belt and trying to retrieve their hand baggage from the overhead cabins even before the flight comes to a halt! This is the common scenario one can see on a regular basis on this route. Flight attendants sometimes even lose their patience and reprimand them considering the security risk. But passengers will never learn. In front of foreign passengers, such attitude demeans the entire Indian community.

In the case of Emirates crash-landing incident at Dubai, one can clearly see the selfishness of a few passengers who scramble to deplane safely along with their hand bags, putting others' lives at risk.

However, while condemning this behaviour, many NRIs have also condemned the racial attack on Indians in general. But the person who posted the comment on Facebook quickly clarified the post after facing the heat from other Indians.

"Rats is a term I use for anyone who behaves like an idiot," the flight attendant posted. The message finally ended with an apology. But there was no 'sorry' for the racist remarks.

The cabin crew of Emirates 521 did a remarkable job in saving passengers' lives. This courageous act of the crew members has been widely appreciated across the social media.

Grateful passengers have recalled how the cabin crew guided passengers to jump out of the aircraft and were themselves the last ones to get off.

"They did a commendable job. The cabin crew could be seen running towards the emergency exits and opened the doors asking people to get out. They were the last to get out," says a passenger.

In the process of saving lives, an Emirates national, firefighter Jassim Issa Al Balooshi, was martyred. His bravery has been widely hailed by the rulers and other leaders of the UAE.

First of all. The passengers need to respect the emergency protocol of an aircraft, listen to the cabin crew. Do not pick the luggage rather just head to the emergency exit.So you save yourself & help save the people behind you waiting for their turn to get out & also not to put Firefighters who try to save the last person's life in danger. 90 sec is the time.Better to keep passport & purse in your pockets.
Since this article also highlights very bad comments from other people (possible other cabin crew). You cannot totally blame the people, most of these passangers might have done this under panic. Most of the passengers may be flying to other countries (not dubai/uae as final destination)who are on connection flight. Most of the passengers may be blue collared workers. Therefore they might have tried to grab the belongings. Am sure this happens/ happened in other nation in similar circumstance & We indians may do it more. Its a lesson to all of us not to do such things in future if such unfortunate event occur!!

Documents and purses should always be on one's self. It is not to be carried in our hand luggage. When you live abroad you value life so even I thought it strange that in an emergency people were more worried about their hand baggage thus endangering other lives. I also agree that the passengers were not fully aware of the gravity of the situation they were in. We need to value life and change our habits.

I think there should be one loud siren it should go on.

    Otherwise how people will understand.

I pilot tells story in Arabic and repeats everything in English.

So be very clear. Tell everything in English loudly and put on siren during emergency. That would be enough.

With due respect to the pilots with thousands of successful flying hours I fail to understand the following:
    1. Landing gear failed to function but still the pilot went on to descend and only on seeing the runway informed the Air Traffic Controller who advised him to abort and take off again.
    2. In this process the tail hit the runway and the rest is history.
    3. Landing gears are hydraulic and make a loud thud when ever they function.
    4. I wonder if the pilot was deaf / drunk or sleepy.
How can we trust these ...

@jossey - god is great. So everyone survived along with their handbags.

Only fair investigation could reveal truth.

I still do not understand why do aircrafts do not test landing gears in the mid air? There should be some backup landing gear in case of one failure. What say? It will not cost much compared to aircraft itself.

Landing gears are the most essential thing next to aircraft engines.

Hind sight is 20/20. I have lived in the West for over 30 years, both the West and the East have valuable cultural jewals that we can learn from and benefit. Western culture places a high value for safety and hence a highly litigant society. The Airline could face enormous legal implications for loss of lives that could be prevented. Procuring ones own carry on bags in the wake of imminent death and danger to others defies logic and respect for ones own life and the lives of others. At this rate, we have a long way to go before we learn what is very basic.

    Baggage should be centrally locked.

beng a Indian I'm ashamed many times the way we have positioned ourself in UAE for survival. All aspects we are made to look funny by few Indians but not by all ..... Being outclassed by many countries but not by all. When it comes to parking / driving ethics and many more ...

Change needs to come from within & it shows how desperate we are when it comes to living life without fear in UAE.
Being law abiding expats & not take shit from others.

There is less knowledge on crisis management among peoples all over world... why to spare Indians only? Loving their things is a human tendency. Even people may pose as if they know everything... result exposes during such crisis. And such accidents are always unpredictable and unforeseen in nature. Such sudden occasions all of a sudden they get panic and try to get their goods first before escaping. This tendency is not only with Indians, people of England, America or other forward countries have the same... The number of Indian travelers Indians were more and the blame on them in this particular case. only trained people on crisis management and those have knowledge of this kind may try to escape within available time.. Profit makers of this Air Travel business at least spend some amount to enhance the knowledge of these peoples on over coming from such crisis...

Whoever passed racist comments has reasons to do so. Having lived and travelled abroad for the past several years, I have seen the extent of disgust towards Indians , and the main reason for it is the uncultured behaviour of our people. It may take hundred years to change the perception of the world towards Indians, or who knows, it may never change.

Learn from the accidents! Point is valuable " life is more than anything".For a safety purpose Flights has to lock all upper baggage cabins once take off and unlock on cabin screws instruction only.Next step they can consider to make fire proof cabinets for ONLY some valuable documents. we are right, in collecting of our belongings , but make sure we are not making risk to others life too (time is soo important while escaping from a accident)

First of all, let us Fold our Hands n Thank GOD. Hats off to this Pilot, Crew & all staff who helped passengers with a safe exit. God Bless them all. It is ridiculous to watch this video, but I am not surprised at all. It is so very true with " Typically Indian Passengers" not to follow safety measures. I am a Proud Indian, but when it comes to these issues, I hide my face where I can. Flight Crew will announce to put Mobiles off, still we have few talking on phone loudly, seat belts need to be in place, our mentality is - no why should I? You have to collect your luggage from the cabin & all passengers will have to go out, we are in a hurry to stand up n pick our luggage, even as aircraft is still not halted. Why is this hurry and drama to alight / dis embark the flight, when we all have to alight the same aircraft, go toe conveyor belt to collect our bags.
Racist comments are not welcome, but if you look at it from their end, isnt it true. Are those bags important or our lives important? Are we trying to embarrass ourselves as Indian Community ? Should we learn to maintain our dignity as Indians first before pointing out on issues which are at times "bitter Facts, Bitter Pills " !!

Yes my India is shining in 21st Century! Indians are at the developed nation pace soon. Indians, compared to many are highly educated. Our education has made us smart, self sufficient and progressive, but alas our attitude, behaviour, thought of others are far behind whats the use of we ahead of many others? Is this emergency situation and panic of people in the video is not a live example of our inhumane behaviour at the hour of life-threatening situation. We still ponder for our things, laptops, materials, neglecting another human being who too is trying to escape from the danger. Our education, culture, materialism has made us greedy even at the hour of life emergency. Dont I think about another life? It is a live record of progressive, educated, wealthy, international Indians behaviour! Material and material and wealth.
I am highly saddened for the tragic trap of our brothers and sisters. A wake up call for us to practice humanity, altruism and love. Sorry for the tragedy and RIP to the great Jassim Issa an Emirate national.

Whether the passengers on board, knew the fact that the flight caught fire or not, that is immaterial. The question always haunting under critical condition like this is the behavior of fellow passengers in particular and Indians in general is so ridiculous, intriguing and foolish.
When the crew members are trying their hell and neck to evacuate all the passengers safely by all the possible means, these fellow passengers are mainly focusing on their hand luggage from the cabin above their head and racist comments instead of helping their fellow passengers to deboard.Shame on you guys. This is what the Indian mentality our own nationals that too fellow passengers
In the process of saving lives, an Emirates national, firefighter Jassim Issa Al Balooshi, was martyred. His bravery has been widely hailed by the rulers and other leaders of the UAE.I sincerely bow my head with great respect to him and Pray Almighty to grant an eternal peace to the departed soul and bestow enough strength, energy, patience, tolerance to his family members to sustain this irreparable loss. Hats off to this brave person.

As expected a typical behaviour, even if they come from a very literate society and state, but old habits don't die hard.. Eye opener for every Indian in future travelling to foreign country, please please follow guidelines by respective airlines, saving yourself and helping others should be priority... At least in the future learn from this...so we won't be bashed or termed as rats in the social media....

By chance if would have travelling in same flight..would have catched 10-15 keklis (neck). Really they put all people's life on risk. However flight pursuer and crew members in this airline found good and appreciable for there duty. Should given appreciation for there work thru reward..are alighted at last after risking.there like. Really comendable job done.

It is not untrue, that we Indians do not obey laws and act with curtsy.

The moment the plane touches the runway, one can hear the belts being taken off, mobiles switched on, reaching out for bags etc.

After deboarding, people spend a few hours at immigration and customs, but the hurry to be the FIRST ONE is rubbed into us. I don't think we should feel bad at the racist comments, but do some introspection.

There is nothing to blame others for this opinion about our indian fliers.Even me being indian felt the same, whilst flying on domestic and international flight.our indians brothers are always in hurry all the time, they switch on their mobile, once the plane touch the ground and there starts sound of phone rings of all tunes in all direction..and starts to take headluggage.and finally there will be big 'Q' by the time plane comes to halt...to get out...and wait there till flight attendant opens the door for 15 minutes in standing and gets down like a people getting out of train in mumbai during peak hour travelling. lot of times i laughed myself for this behaviour of fellow fliers.

Emirates most of staff are foreigners. They tried to save the selfish Indian people. If it is Air India.... Pilot and staff are selfish Indian... They might have ran first with the announcement... We are in danger..save yourself.

Yes,it is an embarrassment for Indian community.I gone through various v.clip and heard talking very lightly and wandering to take H.bag and personal belonging etc.

Mr(sri)French and Arabic are international languages which is helpful beyond India. If you are well versed with Arabic language(read write and talk fluently,I think you will get multi lakhs of rupees salaries in Gulf countries)Safety subject must be come from heart or practice but not as a theory.

Sri, Karkala...kokke padreg vol chance thikkndala budayar!!, If not you will create one like above comments in the difficult situation!! Why not you initiate these basic knowledge and safety rules need to taught in primary school??? Your government is in central power!! Do you mean to say BD & SRS will teach these safety rules while they need to learn basic human behavior!? Your suggestion is highly non practical for situation of such magnitude!!

@Ronald- even I have travelled in emirates flight to JFK NY via Dubai. It was a very long journey in Boeing 777-400.
Well. Issue is that our peoples negligence. If someone gives good comment he will be put down. People think that they are smarter than others. During my flight what pilot murmuring in Arabic. They he said everything in English.
French and Arabic can studied after 10th standard. Many people leave education after 10th. So basic knowledge of safety should be given during 7th standard.

    Please google...
    It is wide body aircraft.
Obviously it cannot land in bajpe.
I think only Boeing 737-300 and a-320 can land in Mangalore that's it.

Were the passengers aware of the fact that the aircraft was on fire? Perhaps not. That could be one of the reasons why they wanted to take hand bags containing passports and other valuables.

    Unfortunate to hear these comments.

All these basic knowledge and safety rules need to taught in primary school instead of French and Arabic.

First our school teachers need to be trained well. They should know what is air safety and road safety rules.

Sri, it's a basic things which one no need to go to school to learn. There are many things in life where people life as their life goes on.

It's a greediness and stupidity of few passengers here who were fond of their belongings than their and others life. To such people even if u teach thousand times they will never learn as the love for materials are imbibed in their heart than life of others.

They even forgot that hardly you get seconds to escape that when normally an aircraft crashes turn into flames within few seconds or minutes... In this flight case they were totally lucky that none of the flight passenger or cabin crew lost their life, but such cases are rare hence people should better learn from their mistake.
