Udupi, Jan 26: Alupotsava, a three-day fest with an intention of promoting tourism organized by the district administration got a colourful start here on Friday, January 25.

Dr Jayamala, women and child development minister, flagged off the fest by unfurling a flag consisting two fish and a symbol of Alupa dynasty who ruled Tulunadu.

Jayamala also inaugurated the 4-km heritage walk across temples and basadis in Barkur, aimed at informing the tourists about the rich heritage of Barkur. A procession was also inaugurated on the occasion. Colorful umbrellas, Kalladka dolls, folk dance and tiger dance teams joined the procession.

The procession, which began at Simhasanagudde, passed through the main streets of the town and culminated at the fort grounds.

Speaking on the occasion, Jaimala said that Barkur will be developed as a major tourist centre.

“Tourism will also generate employment. Barkur was the third capital of the Alupa dynasty after Mangaluru and Udyavar. The Alupa dynasty had ruled Tulunadu for over 1,000 years. Efforts would be made to hold the Alupotsava every year,” she said.

A fruit and flower show was another attraction during the inaugural. An elephant, a Linga, two fish, and a butterfly made of roses and other flowers caught the eyes of the visitors. An exhibition with various stalls was also held at the fort grounds. There was also a fireworks display at the venue during the inauguration.
