Mangaluru: Open manhole in Shivabagh causes 18 accidents in 2 days

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Oct 3: An open manhole in Shivabagh has turned into a deathtrap. The manhole is situated in middle of the road which connects Nanthoor, Bunts Hostel and Kankanady. It has caused 18 accidents in the last two days.

Many two-wheeler riders and auto-rickshaw drivers have suffered with the wheels of their vehicles getting stuck in the manhole. However, the major worry is that there is no caution sign or temporary barricade to make people aware of the deathtrap.

In the late hours, there are many who take this route. With Navaratri celebrations in the city, there are many who take a stroll to view the city’s beauty. Any unsuspecting pedestrian can fall to death, because of this manhole.

Shop owners of the area have already informed MCC officials to close the deadly manhole. However, no one has responded or bothered to get the manhole repaired.

The irresponsibility of MCC and its officials has made residents of the area frustrated. They have given MCC a 12-hour deadline to fix the manhole, after which the road will be blocked as protest.

Open manholes and several potholes in the city are turning into potential hazards. While Mangaluru is headed towards becoming a Smart City, lack of maintenance in the city’s civic infrastructure has become a major concern.

People are venting ire on social media on MCC’s poor performance on addressing civic issues.

Our corporation is so funny. They are corrupt to the core. At light house hill near the central library the road leading to Jyothi there is a speed breaker which is after a zebra crossing. The speed breaker should have been first and then the zebra crossing. Here it is the other way. So dangerous for so many students and public. Drivers and riders are not bothered if anyone is walking on the zebra crossing. There is no preference to pedestrians.

Open manholes are a problem - there is no confusion on that. Perhaps they were expecting it to rain heavily the next day.

However out of curosity, the auto-rickshaw in the photos with the front tire stuck in the manhole - isn't it trying to enter the wrong side of the road ?

It is made of concrete of very poor quality, hence it has crumbled. No robbery like before of metal covers. Seems you are not from Mangalore

    Antony,
At present I am in Mangalore.
Agree with you to certain extent.
Even those lids made of concrete are having some steel beneath.
