Media Release

Manipal, Mar 9: On the occasion of World Glaucoma week 2020, Department of Ophthalmology of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal organized glaucoma screening program on Monday, March 9. The theme for the Glaucoma Week 2020 is 'B-I-G’ (Beat Invisible Glaucoma). Glaucoma is a disorder involving gradual and irreversible damage of the optic nerve. It usually occurs because the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) is too high or sometimes the blood supply to the optic nerve is inadequate. It is the most common cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma cannot be cured, however, if it is detected and treated early, blindness can be prevented. Early detection through regular eye examination is extremely important as in most cases it gradually develops without noticeable symptoms. Once diagnosed, treatment programmes must be rigorously adhered to or blindness can result.

To mark World Glaucoma Week, the Department of Ophthalmology of Kasturba Hospital organized glaucoma screening camp for the general public. The program has benefited more than 500 people.

Guest of honour of the program, district health and family welfare officer of Udupi district Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda said, "Over 90 per cent of glaucoma problems are overlooked.
