Udupi: MAHE launches 'Tunes of a Single String' book

Media Release

Udupi, Oct 1: Universal Press (MUP), a unit of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), has announced the release of 'Tunes of a Single String,' a captivating English translation by Dr N Thirumaleshwara Bhat. The book is based on the anthology Ekatari Sanchari, originally written by renowned poet Dr Katyayani Kunjibettu. This modernist collection offers readers an immersive journey through rural landscapes and Indian mythology, enriched with emotional depth and vivid imagery.

The event was graced by several prominent speakers. Dr Sharath Rao, pro vice-chancellor of Health Sciences at MAHE, spoke about the intricate art of translating poetry. He highlighted the unique challenges involved, noting that unlike visual art, which allows for open interpretation, translating poetry demands a nuanced, almost "transcreative" approach to capture the essence of the original work. He emphasized that translation is a powerful tool for connecting languages and cultures, fostering deeper understanding and appreciation.

The chief guest, Lakshmisha Tolpadi, delved into the broader challenges of expressing literary vision through words. He observed that literature often emerges from human struggle and conflict, offering timeless insights into the human experience. Citing the Mahabharata as an example, Tolpadi emphasized how literature, like language itself, resonates on multiple levels, often functioning as a subconscious translation of life's complexities.  Tolpadi was also honored at the event for his recent recognition as a Sahitya Akademi Award recipient for the year 2023.

Reflecting on his work, Prof Dr N Thirumaleshwara Bhat, the translator of Tunes of a Single String, shared his personal journey in the field of translation. He recalled the guidance and encouragement of his mentor, former principal Prof Ku Shi Haridas Bhat, who gave him his first translation project. Dr Bhat noted that translation, especially literary translation, is a celebration of language, stressing the importance of capturing both the thoughts and emotions of the original text to offer readers a genuine poetic experience.

Dr Katyayani Kunjibettu, the original author of Ekatari Sanchari, expressed her gratitude to those who supported her along the way, sharing that her poetry is deeply rooted in her childhood and shaped by the influences of prominent Kannada scholars. She extended her heartfelt thanks to all those who encouraged her throughout her literary career.

The event’s guest of honour, Prof Laxminarayana Karanth, principal of MGM College, congratulated both the author and the translator. He expressed pride in their association with MGM College and wished Dr Kunjibettu continued success in her literary endeavors.

Dr Srinivasa Acharya, chief editor (in-charge) at MUP, and associate professor and head of Philosophy at MAHE, congratulated both Dr Kunjibettu and Dr Bhat on the release of Tunes of a Single String. He emphasized the significance of the publication, which marks MUP's milestone 290th release. Dr Srinivasa commended MUP’s commitment to publishing nearly 300 books across a range of disciplines while embracing the digital age without losing sight of the value of printed books.
