Mexico City, April 25 (IANS/EFE) Two baby crocodiles and a chameleon were found hidden in crates during a routine baggage inspection conducted by federal law enforcement agents at the Mexico City airport, authorities said.
The animals are considered endangered species, the Public Safety Secretariat said.
The crates were found aboard a commercial flight that originated in Monterrey, the capital of the northern state of Nuevo Leon.
The documentation used to transport the animals did not allow their legal shipment to the capital.
The two Morelet's crocodiles, or Mexican crocodiles, and the Jackson's chameleon were taken to a Federal Police facility, where they were turned over to environmental protection agency officials.
Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport is the country's largest airport, handling more than 25 million passengers annually.
