Surprise, Surprise! Mangalore Tops List of Most Hygenic Districts in Country

Belgaum, May 5 (Deccan Chronicle): It's official. Most districts in Karnataka have miserable sanitation says the World Bank.

Only three districts have made it among the top 50 in the survey conducted by the bank, with Mangalore topping the list of 593 districts in the country. The other two in the top 50 are Udupi (rank 11) and Shimoga (rank 13).

Kolhapur district made it to the second spot followed by Ernakulam, Kozikode, Malpuram and Trissur in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth spots respectively.

Despite the implementation of sanitation programmes at regular intervals, many of the districts of north-Karnataka are not hygienic, says the survey. Belgaum district where the government spent crores on sanitation over the last two years comes 203rd in the list, but tops the districts of north Karnataka .

The World Bank survey took into consideration the construction of toilets, utilisation of funds and Nirmal Gram Puraskar prize money, work done by local bodies and people’s participation among other issues, when making its assessment.

Mangalore which emerged first in the country, does not have toilets for 17,746 houses but impressed the World Bank in all other departments.

The state as a whole, has however, failed the sanitation test despite the Rs 100 crore sanctioned for each of the eight city corporations for their sanitation programmes.

Like Belgaum where the city corporation has failed to effectively dispose its waste, other corporations too, except for Udupi and Mangalore, have not been serious about sanitation.

We Mangaloreans should feel happy now for Mangalore being in the news for good reasons after repeatedly Mangalore was shown in bad light after pub attacks, church attacks by useless groups like Bajaranga Dal, Rama Sene etc.

Normally Mangaloreans are inherited with sense of cleanliness and this can be noticed with mangaloreans in any part of the world.

Prabhakar Mendon, Katapadi/Abu Dhabi we are seeing the work of central UPA govt. The NH 17 (now NH 66) BC Road-Suratkal four lane work was scheduled to be completed during the year 2007 and still now it's not fully completed. I think you have'nt visited those places and talking about BJP. Regarding rain havoc in bangalore. This type of havoc was there in bangalore even when SM Krishna was the CM of our state. What was he doing?? Why he didnot take any measures to prevent such type of havoc during rainy seasons? But when such type of havoc take place during BJP govt rule you people comment as if other govt's have done something great in the past.

I would request some over here to just vist Shimoga our CM place, one of the dirtiest cities I have ever seen. I am not blaming Yeddy for this, People are not clean over there what can Yeddy do.

Well said Mr.Sudhakar P,Mangalore completely agree with you, Everyone loves to take the credit.

This is called politicians brain give big certificate to each and everything so that the general public assume that great development work done by the ruling govt., and stop expecting any further development in the city. This is called political game to pocketing money and vote bank policy. End of the day the sufferes and loosers are general public.

As caption reads, surprise, it's a sweet surprise. Unfortunately, there is no standard set for Hygiene for this award. So, quietly accept the award. MCC also won Award for Waste Management and Green Leaf Award !Go around the city, you can count wastebins in shape/out of shape, overflowing with garbage. Look at the trucks collecting garbage, look at the workers barefoot, without gloves, segregating plastic bottles/milk packets etc and filling and carrying in different bags prior to loading of waste from the bins. You will find Medical Waste in these dustbins too. At the end of the day, all this does not get noticed, because we have won award. Come Monsoon, we have to discuss Malaria....

When I enter Mangalore from Pumpwell side- it stinks & near vegitable market-with rotting leftovers its abominable.Boat dock where fish are downloaded I wonder why(in) Dubai- Fish Market doesn't stink while ours spreads fragrances of all sorts?
As many who have commented regarding- if this is the best in our country-then I fear what is the worst experience in other places.
Is it like garbage in & garbage out?

If it is considered that Mangalore is the Most Hygenic Dist in India, though seeing lot of dirtiness in and around the city, then we should be proud of it. There are many issues to be addressed in this city 1. Stop the spitting. 2. Start throwing garbages into the Bin and not outside. 3. Stop Urinating on Footpaths. 4. Stop Accumulating dirty water giving rise to Malaria especially people in the constructing field. 5. Gradually put an end to plastics. 6. Form an association in every area of mangalore to look into cleanliness of the particular area and address many other issue. This way we will be able to make Mangalore a still better city and district not only in India but give an impression to people around the world that Mangalore is a place of tourist with wonderful beaches, Tasty south Indian Veg. hotels, Tasty Fishes, Beautiful monuments of more than 500 years old and so on. Anything is possible to achieve if we have the will.

I just cant believe it. Mangalore is a clean city in India. I get
paranoid when I see the dirt in Mangalore. Either all other cities in India are garbages or the person from the world bank was bribed more than the other cities by the influential Mangalore cut-throaght buisness-men.
These persons who are giving compliments are naive.

Glad to read. But Mangalore and Udupi districts need more clean and hygienic toilets at bus stands and other public places, which could utilize some kind of technology to dry the hands after using the wash room. I would encourage Daijiworld to take the lead in creating awareness through this medium. Getting the first place in a list is great, but having those facilities is another thing.
