Mangaluru: Renewal of Aadhaar record optional, clarifies UIDAI

Updated

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Dec 22: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has clarified that update on 10 year old Aadhaar cards is not compulsory but optional.

In a media release, UIDAI said, “During the past decade, Aadhaar number has emerged as a proof of identity of residents in India. Aadhaar number is being used for availing several government schemes and services.

“Residents who had got their Aadhaar issued 10 years ago, and have never updated after that in these years, such Aadhaar number holders are encouraged to get their documents updated.

“Some news reports have incorrectly reported on Thursday that it has been made mandatory. It is informed to ignore these reports and social media posts.

“The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has previously issued a press release underlining that it is urging and encouraging residents to keep their documents updated. The recently issued gazette notification also clearly mentions that residents ‘may’ do so on completion of every 10 years.

“Keeping the documents in Aadhaar updated helps in ease of living, better service delivery, and enables accurate authentication. UIDAI has always encouraged residents to keep their documents updated, and the gazette notification is another step in that direction,” stated the press release.

Mangaluru: Aadhaar record renewal made mandatory

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Dec 22: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has instructed Aadhaar card holders, who have got the card done 10 years ago, to get the same renewed.

The information in the Aadhaar card like address and other important details have to be updated with the present records. All old Aadhaar card holders should ensure that the details on the card are the latest ones.

Aadhaar card is playing a vital role in securing government facilities for the past 10 years. Due to the linking of Aadhaar card with bank account, the amount is transferred directly to the account of beneficiaries.

If anyone, who has got the Aadhaar card done 10 years ago and subsequently renewed it with updated details, then there is no need for such people to renew the card once again. Only those people who have not done any changes or update on their Aadhaar card for the past 10 years, need to visit the nearby Aadhaar registration centres. They have to pay specified renewal fee also as per the publication of the deputy commissioner.

aadhaar card is based on biometrics... fingerprint and iris... normally biometrics based identity is valid for 10 years... moreover if you have stopped residing in your aadhaar card address, it is in your own interest to change the address to your current address...

The gazette notification only says the every 10 years one "may" get details updated, and citizens are encouraged to do so, it does not mean it is mandatory.

While delivering its verdict back in 2018 on constitutional validity of Aadhaar, 5 memeber bench of SC made these key observations: * The Supreme Court upheld the validity of Aadhaar saying sufficient security measures are taken to protect data and it is difficult to launch surveillance on citizens on the basis of Aadhaar. * The SC asked the Centre to bring a robust law for data protection as soon as possible. * The SC said Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory for openings of a bank account and for getting mo-bile connections. * The SC said that Aadhaar must not be made compulsory for school admission and the administration cannot make it mandatory. * The SC has made linking of Aadhaar and PAN mandatory. The apex court also made Aadhaar man-datory for filing of Income Tax Return (ITR). * Private companies can't ask for Aadhaar. * The apex court struck down the provision in Aadhaar law allowing sharing of data on the ground of national security. Unfortunately, how Aadhar data of every Indian was misused in the absence of "Data Protection & Privacy" bill is known to whole world. How telecom companies took Aadhaar details without any authority with connivance of government to "assist " their party financiers to steal people's data clandestinely. Displaying persons mobile number on Aadhaar card was biggest and illegal violation. All those who have Aadhaar must obtain "Masked Aadhaar" (masking last 4 digits of aadhaar card) as told by UIDAI to protect their privacy at least from here onwards even if it is too late.

Updation required only if there are any changes in details given 10 years back or later. Else, it is not required. It is only a "ploy" to collect people's mobile numbers illegally as mobile numbers and email are not mandatory for obtaining aadhaar. For more information read FAQ's on UIDA I official website,
