Mangaluru, Dec 23: Guruvappa Bayaru (58), an artiste of Sri Durgaparameshwari Yakshagana troupe, breathed his last on Thursday December 22 night during the performance of Yakshagana play due to cardiac arrest.

Thrijanma Moksha Yakshagana play was going on at Saraswati Sadana presented by fourth Mela of Kateel. Bayaru was playing the part of Shishupala. The last part of the play was being presented. Suddenly, Bayaru, who was standing on the stage, collapsed and fell down from the stage. Though he was rushed immediately to hospital, he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

Bayaru had written Ashtamangala Yakshagana Prasanga and presented the play at Townhall Mangaluru in last monsoon season. After touring with various Yakshagana troupes, Bayaru joined Kateel troupe in 2013. He used to play roles like Madhukaitaba and received several awards.

Kudos to the Yakshagana artists who work day and night to keep this amazing artform alive and thriving .. It is strenuous to dance carrying the heavy clothes .. Maybe they are paid less not at par with current inflation trends .. Also because of lockdown fears ,there is immense phycological damage and anxiety running on everyone's mind. especially artists who depend on art for income. It is also possible that these are cases of "long covid" . Om Shanthi to the departed soul.
