No 'nikkah' if there is song & dance at wedding: UP cleric

Bulandshahr (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 26 (IANS): Clerics in Bulandshahr district have announced that they will not solemnize 'nikah' if there is singing and dancing in the weddings.

"If a wedding has a DJ, singing and dancing, we will not solemnize the nikah," said Qazi-e-shahr Maulana Aarif Qazmi, after addressing a meeting of Ulemas and cleric.

He later told the reporters that singing and dancing at weddings was not a part of Islamic culture and amounted to over spending money on the occasion.

He said that the Ulemas wanted to rid the Muslim society of social evils and ensure that the girl's side is not made to bear additional financial burden.

Better to spend money on education instead of marriages.

There are 3 reasons for them to be right. 1) Music is outlawed in Islam 2) In Islam, no expenses to be borne by bride (on the day of Nikah)(No need of even providing lunch. Nikah can be solemnized at evening time as well) 3) ‘A’isha (R.A) reported the Prophet (S.A.W) as saying, “The marriage which produces most blessing is that which involves least burden.” (Unnecessary expenses) Reference : Mishkat al-Masabih 3097

Daring statement/decision. As someone observed, money power can lead to compromise and slowly creep in all unhealthy practices. Dance is not unhealthy, but the life style is getting contaminated with western practices imitated blindly.

@ Johnson, How can they demand money ; When it is clearly said by them that No Nikah will be solemnized in case of Music and dance; how is there a possibility to demand money and solemnize Nukah?. It is indeed a very good decision because Music is outlawed in Islam (only daff is allowed in Marriage ) and also on the basis of the following Hadith (1) ‘A’isha (R.A) reported the Prophet (S.A.W) as saying, “The marriage which produces most blessing is that which involves least burden.” (Unnecessary expenses) Reference : Mishkat al-Masabih 3097

Exactly! The wedding should be simple with lease expense . Generally the girls father would have another 15 or 20 daughters to marry off and all his earnings will be spent just on weddings and then he gets into illegal activities to earn money .

@ Jb Mangalore, Firstly, there is no expense for Father of the bride in Islam, even the Nikah can be solemnized at the evening time ( to avoid lunch expenses). Moreover, in Islam, the bride has the right (obligatory to the bridegroom to pay) to ask for any money/ gold/ any other thing from the bridegroom as a part of marriage contract. This money has to be handed over to the bride before Nikah. So, there is no expense at all as you think from bride. Even when I got married 12'years ago, I solemnized Nikah at the time of evening. The parents of my wife did not spend on our grand launch party. We had a samosa & dates after Nikah. From our side, only my mother, uncles and aunties attended the function to avoid spending from my wife's side. Secondly, those who do illegal things to spend on marriages, there is a huge possibility that they practice illegal things in aspects of life. They will be answerable for that on the day of judgement; marriage is not the reason to practice illegal things.

Yes, singing & music are haram in their religion, but their kings in India didn't follow those rules or their musicians like Bismilla Khan, Zakhir Hussein or legendary singers like Mohammed Rafi, composer A R Rehman etc. The same way actors from their community from males to females too didn't follow the tradition but followed our Indian Tradition. Their Kings too encouraged singers & dancers too. Belly Dance is part of Arabian Desert Safaris. The cleric should first clarify the word Nikkah as far as Arabian meaning of it is concerned as it isn't about marriage but something else in reality.

@Dev, You are confused between the terms Muslim and Islam. If some so called Muslims do something outlawed in Islam, then Islam does not allow to change the rulings to please those so called Muslims. So, don't portray that Bismillah Khan or AR Rahman or Khans or Arabs are ideals for all practicing Muslims. Islam never changes its rules on demand by those people.

Give him something, he will also dance with the group. All such restrictions are as a demand to get money.
