Udupi: Anti-tobacco Day Message Conveyed in Unique Way

Udupi, May 31: Known for their creative ideas, artists of Manipal Sand Art and Artists Forum - Shreenath Manipal, Venki Palimar, Ravi Hirebettu - carved a sculpture out of paper cups to depict the adverse effect of consuming tobacco on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.
The programme was organized jointly by Kasturba Hospital Manipal and Shirdi Saibaba Cancer Hospital.
Medical Officer Dr Pulgaonkar unveiled the sculpture. The sculpture consisted of human skull, scorpions and crabs attacking, along with cigarettes, with a message to quit smoking.
Dr Vidyasagar, professor and unit head, department of radiotherapy and oncology, Kasturba Hoapital, Manipal was present.
In India about 8,00,000 to 9,00,000 people die due to consumption of tobacco, at the rate of one death every 8 seconds. Chances of cardiac diseases are three times more in tobacco consumers than others.
The main ingredient in tobacco, nicotine, weakens the supply of blood and oxygen and damages lungs.
