Congress announces second guarantee: Rs 2000 monthly dole for each housewife

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Going a step further on its guaranteed promise of offering 200 units of free power for each household if the Congress party comes to power in the Assembly polls, the State Congress on Monday got its AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to announce the party’s second guarantee of offering a monthly payment of Rs 2,000 to each housewife.

"This is the Congress party’s Second Guarantee of Rs 2000 a month to each housewife shattered by inflation and price rise,’’ Priyanka Gandhi announced at the Congress party’s massive "Naa Nayaki’’ convention of women at the Bengaluru Palace Grounds on Monday.

The monthly dole of Rs 2000 to each housewife or Rs 24,000 a year is the guarantee name is named as ‘’Gruhalakshmi.’’ With this, the Congress party has sought to copy Aam Admi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s penchant for announcing sops to woo the electorate but has put the ruling BJP and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in a tight spot as to how best to negate the Congress party’s promises on freebies, when he presents the State budget on February 17.

KPCC chief D K Shivakumar and Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah, who along with AICC general secretary and State party in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala and other State Congress leaders, ensured that Priyanka Gandhi turns on her charm to woo the women voters, who are almost half the total electorate in the State, through the promise of Rs 2000 each to each housewife or Rs 24,000 a year as the Congress party’s guarantee to the women.

The Congress party will come out with a separate manifesto to address women’s concerns and issues, Priyanka said and pointed out that the Congress party is genuinely concerned and wants to alleviate the sufferings of women, who are suffering due to spiralling price rise.

Will benefit 1.5 cr women

KPCC president Shivakumar described Priyanka Gandhi’s announcement of the Congress party’s Rs 2,000 per month to each housewife, affected by price rise and inflation, under the ‘’Gruhalakshmi’’ second guarantee post elections, as ‘’historic’’ and would benefit 1.5 crore women.

"Women are the strength of our homes and the base for the State’s growth and progress. All families are suffering due to price rise,’’ he said.

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah ridiculed the ruling BJP for releasing full advertisements in newspapers by announcing that Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will come out with a budget for women’s empowerment. "If the chief minister and BJP want to empower women, what prevented them from doing so in the last three and half years? They are worried about definite defeat,’’ he said.

The BJP had given 21 promises to women before the assembly polls in 2018 and after failing to come to power, BJP used 'Operation Kamala' to unseat an elected government and failed to implement any of the promises. Out of the total of 600 promises given to the people, not even 10% were implemented, Siddaramaiah said and pointed out that the BJP woke up after the Congress party’s promise of 200 units of free power to each household.

Bommai, Sudhakar attack Priyanka

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai attacked the Congress party for its women’s empowerment convention with the title, ‘’Naa Nayaki,’’ and wondered whether the opposition party has to issue newspaper advertisements to declare Priyanka Gandhi as its leader.

"Women of Karnataka will not and cannot be fooled by the gimmicks of Congress,’’ Bommai said.

Another BJP leader, Dr K Sudhakar, who jumped from Congress to BJP and became the Health and Family Welfare Minister, claimed that Congress party will lose seats wherever Priyanka Gandhi visits. "The Congress may have got a few seats earlier. But now after Priyanka Gandhi’s visit, the party will lose even the seats it would have own,’’ he predicted.

Addressing BJP workers at Nelamangala, Dr Sudhakar said Congress party cannot match BJP in empowering women and warned that all the promises by Congress cannot be implemented.

This is not good move by Congress . I wonder grand old party is resorting to 'AAP' gimmicks is shameful. If congress , AAP other religiious party goes this level no doubt that soon India one day become Shrilanka, Pakistan and nepal . This s revdi culture will shatter indian economy . I am not against women empower but it should encourage self reliance by designing programmes for women welfare. How would you capitalize the fund for this programme ? obviously government need to depend on tax payers money . Recently In Himachal , post election same congress government failed to kept its promises of reducing petrol diesel , rather its hiked the cost of petrol diesel .

Dear Congress team, Firstly did you consult with HDK Sir or Dodda Gowdru, before making such announcement? . At the end Congress has to go for a coalition for ruling. You guys are aware of that. So if the promises are not kept , its big time rear ending from the people and the coalition partner. The coalition will fall off in 6 months.

Political parties are creating a culture of dependency on the government. Political parties should encourage sell reliance by creating temporary welfare programs for people in need. Give people a hand up not a handout.

Not sure what they are consuming to make such promises. At 24000 per year and 1.5 Crore target population, it is an outlay of 36000 Crores. This is approximately 20% of the state expenditure let alone the revenue which is approx 1.5 lakh crore as of now. So promise being made but clueless on how to finance this expenditure. Govt employee won't agree for a pay cut. With GST , limited option for state to increase taxes except for liquor and fuel. The other option is beg for central funds and when rejected blame it on center for non-fulfillment of promises. But, then who cares as long as elections are won.

Even BJP made countless freebies like free electricity, free ration with home delivery etc etc in UP to retain existing state in recent election. Compared to that this is much much normal & need based.

Support income as humanitarian aid is not taxable on beneficiaries that is people. It’s a least amount given to house wives to compensate who do not have salaried income so they are well within tax exempt bracket. Govt too should match or give more to one income families that is from husband families to offset inflation claws. BJP should prove its Hindutva idealogy here if its for real.

Sadly the grand old party is resorting to 'AAP' tricks of populism like dole out of rupees every month. This revdi culture will ruin economy no doubt, but clearly shows desperation of the party to win by hook or crook.

Shocking! If this is not "bribing" women to vote from the money the Government collects in the form of taxes from each and every one, what else can it be. Where else will the Congress get the money unless it asks the Reserve Bank to print new money to pay, and thereby def;ate the existing money in circulation!!!! God bless the Congress despite its foolishness!

More than 80% of the voters are born post 1980 and are well educated to see thru such gimmics. These announcements wont win electoral battles! Be pragmatic with what you announce. Who is going to fund it? Other tax payers? These promises did not work in other states. its not practifically feasible as well.

If the opposition party can do so much for people during these hard times how much more the ruling party should do instead of only talking and talking and throwing muck at people who do good. BJP can only do better than this to counter congress’s move instead of fake promises and with lewd talk against congress. People now want to see not hear. People are no more Blind.

Congress promised realistic and the need based Rs. 2000 monthly assistance to Women to manage her home from rising inflation due to utter failure of double engine sarkaar. This is not like 15L Topi of 2014 announced by Chacha which seldom came true.
