District Jail to be Shifted to Bantwal, Other Development Works in Full Swing

Mangalore, Jun 2: Deputy commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda has said that the district jail located in the city will be shifted to a 59-acre government land in Cheloor village of Bantwal taluk.
The shift is as per the directions of chief minister Yeddyurappa. Initially the demand was for 15 acres, then for 50 acres. The new jail building constructed in the city at the cost of Rs 2.6 crore will be utilized for other purposes, he informed reporters on Thursday June 2.
Out of the Rs 100 crore released in the second phase of the most-awaited Mangala Corniche ring-road project, Rs 2 crore has been allotted for inspection work. Mangalore City Development Authority will call tenders for inspection within a week, he added.
Of the Rs 100 crore given by the CM to MCC in the first phase to undertake various development projects in the city, construction worth Rs 90 crore has been completed and Rs 86 crore has already been paid to contractors. Proposal for additional Rs 7 crore has been accepted and even for the second phase of the works, permission has been granted for the allotment of Rs 100 crore. Work on constructing footpaths will be given extra priority, he said.
Solid Waste Management: This is the responsibility of local bodies, but the district administration has been extending suggestions, the DC said. As of now, 75 % of the houses are covered under door-to-door waste collection project. By December 2011 remaining 25 % will also be covered. They will be scientifically managed. From June 15, plastic will be banned in Panambur and Tannirbavi beaches and later will be extended to others places too, he informed.
Runway Extension: Proposal has been sent for the grant of 150 acres of land required for Mangalore Airport’s runway extension, he said.
About illegal sand mining in the district Gowda said that till June 15 sand mining will continue on royalty basis. Action will be taken in case sand mining is carried out in CRZ area. A special team of 6 officials has been prepared to keep a lookout for illegal sand mining, he added. In case of violation licence and vehicle will be seized.
Ravichandra Nayak has been appointed as tahsildar for Mangalore taluk, he informed. Pending files, income certificates, RTC among other files will be handled by him soon, he said.
The public can consult the tahsildar on any matter, the DC said and added that for the convenience of public, next week a public relation officer (PRO) will be appointed.
