Mangalore, Jun 6: The Nallasopara police in Mumbai have finally succeeded in arresting Ninjur Ashok Shetty, accused in Shalini’s murder.
The accused Ashok Shetty is a close relative of Taranath Shetty, Shalini's husband. Ashok Shetty, a resident of Keremajalu in Ninjur Village of Karkala is also a married man and has a child.
Shalini (30), daughter of Anni Shetty from Perindile Mane in Laila village was married to Taranath Shetty from Gujjottu House of Gardadi village in the taluk on May 7, 2009 and was pregnant when murdered on Tuesday May 3. Taranath Shetty, who works as the manager of a canteen in Thane, had set up his family in his flat in Nallasopara, Mumbai.
The police were facing difficulties initially in cracking the case. However, chance revelation of Taranath Shetty that Ashok had visited their house a few days before she was found murdered helped the police make a head-away into the case.
Following this, police kept a track on Ashok's movements and also traced his phone calls. Soon Ashok was held at his wife’s house near Maripalla of Farangipet.
Accused confesses
The accused Ashok Shetty was brought to Mumbai for interrogation, where he confessed that he saw Shalini wearing plenty of gold jewellery at a function in the city two months ago and was attracted towards it as he was in a severe financial crunch, following loss in business at Bangalore and Mumbai. As per his plan, he went to Shalini's flat on May 1, but found Taranath and returned in vain.
However, on May 3 in the afternoon when he reached Shalini's flat there was no trace of Taranath and there Ashok tried to rape Shalini. However, when his attempt to rape her failed, he killed her mercilessly. Moreover, he took away all her jewellery and sold it in a shop at Moodbidri.
