Udupi: Transgenders bid goodbye to sex work, begging – Start hotel, lead self-reliant life

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Feb 11: Transgenders have to live their life by keeping themselves distant from family and society as both do not accept them. Most of them are natives of outstation districts. They used to beg and indulge in sex work for a living. However, now some have joined together and have started a new life.

Poorvi, Vaishnavi and Chandana are transgenders who used to beg in Udupi and Manipal city areas. They were doing this for some years. However, they have taken a new decision to lead a self-reliant life. They have opened a canteen at city bus stand. When most of the people are asleep, they run their canteen from 1 am to 7 am. Rice bath, idli, tea and coffee are available in their hotel. This quenches the hunger and thirst of night travellers and those who work in night shift. The three join their hands together and prepare delicious snacks and tea to the customers.

Most of the hotels in the city are closed during night time. Hence, people who want to have food late in the night visit the canteen run by the transgenders. They say that the initial response from public is really good. Not only response but they expect respect from the general public. They say that they will show how to live dignified life.

Recently, the SP himself had got down to the streets to curtail the illicit activities of transgenders during late nights. In fact there was a tussle between the transgenders and the SP. People accuse them of stealing and prostitution.

Saddened by the label that is put on them by the public, the three bold transgenders have taken a new step. The first MBA degree holding transgender Sameeksha has invested in the canteen and stood by her friends.

The Udupi City Bus Stand and the area opposite it should be cleared of all illegal vending of food stuff stalls and drunkards of Bijapur and Bagalokot and prostitutes from Manipal. The SP should keep many policemen in plain clothes and arrest all those spoiling the image of Udupi town in the name of business, The Municipality of Udupi is sleeping by allowing all those vendors and food stalls illegally set up all over Udupi by these peoplefrom North Karnataka, instead of raiding them and putting an end to this nuisance in Udupi city. Even the whole street from Udupi Town Police Headquarters to the Ajjarkad Jodukatte are now full of illegal shops set up right under the nose of the SP who is sleeping like the Udupi Municipality as though nothing is abnormal! These people in authority will only wake up if something serious happens! I wonder why these people are in authority in Udupi and instead we the people and citizens must take action and keep our Udupi town clean and clear of all outsiders vending or running prostitution or matka on street corners in around these two Bus terminals.

Why are you wasting precious time in Dubai. Come down and start selling chai-pakoda. When you say something do as you said. Otherwise your word will become harsh to poor families who earn there livlihood from hard work and not thru illegal means like gold smuggling (keeping in unwanted areas in the body), cattle traffickiing, Drug peddling, Theft, Murdering, Terrorism, Taking money thru Love Jehad and many more. List is good. Atlease these good hearted transgenders able to make offering to god from there hard earned money and not 2.5% zakat from drug peddling. Seekho kuch...

Transgenders are normal human beings. There are lot of transgenders living in society with respect. Very few transgenders beg and into prostitution. No one stops them to lead respectable life. They should not mix up with mentally ill gays and lesbians. I hope more and more transgenders should come in mainstream.

This is a good initiative. Transgender and gay people should not be harassed. Society should help them.
