Race for Karnataka CM: Now senior Cong leader Parameshwara throws his hat into the ring

Tumakuru, Feb 16 (IANS): With Assembly elections nearing in Karnataka, the race for the post of Chief Minister has intensified in the Congress which is confident of coming to power after the polls.

Even as there is a straight fight between Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar and leader of opposition Siddaramaiah for the top post, other leaders are also fancying their chances.

G. Parameshwara, senior Dalit leader of the Congress who had missed out on becoming the Chief Minister when Siddaramaiah was picked for the job after the 2013 Assembly elections, said on Thursday that he is very much in the race for the top post.

Parameshwara had suffered a humiliating defeat at his home turf Koratagere in the 2013 Assembly polls, paving the way for Siddaramaiah. Many party insiders had said that it was Siddaramaiah who had orchestrated Parameshewar's defeat at the hands of P.R. Sudhakara Lalin of the JD(S) to make clear his way for the CM's post.

"There are 10 aspirants for the post of Chief Minister after Congress wins the upcoming Assembly elections. I am one of them," Parameshwara told mediapersons here.

"In our party, Chief Ministers are not picked on the basis of caste. There is no concept like Dalit Chief Minister in the party. Whoever is efficient will get the job. Everyone has a desire to become the Chief Minister," he said.

Earlier, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said that both Siddaramaiah and Parameshwara are indispensable leaders for the party, adding that the MLAs will elect the Chief Minister after the elections.

The Congress has claimed that as per an internal survey, the party will achieve comfortable majority in the upcoming Assembly elections. The party is also attacking the BJP for 'having no CM face' when compared to the Congress.

Sidduncle was an ex CM , has admin experience, but has no support even in his backyard . He will be contesting from a distant place Kolar. Its anybodys guess where he will end. DKS I am not sure, what his contribution to the State is? Only known for ED , CBI raids, Money Laundering etc . Under these circumstances , the Congress high command may decide a person with a clean slate as the CMs face to draw votes. The grand old party has to win Karnataka to be in the 2024 race. In my veiw Parameshwara suits the bill better among the 3 .

At last Congress has got a decent face as CM for the State. From now on its going to be tough for BJP. I too felt and its very obvious that Siddu and DKS are just contesting for their survival in politics and to be exempt from Court cases. As long as these 2 are contenders for CM,, its advantage BJP all the way. Now if its Parama it will be a different ball game altogether.

All who were looking forward to voting for congress can imagine the plight of the administration and plight of the party leaders post election. Similar to what we saw in other states, in-fighting and chair pulling will continue. Congress does not need any one to derail it. It can derail and collapse by itself.

Parameshwara should've been CM in 2013 when he was KPCC President and led the polls, but all know who tripped him to a shock defeat! Same thing will happen to Siddu this year.

As of now it is triangle as three aspirants DKSi, Sidda and Parami. Kharge was also an aspirant but he was made congress president. There are other leaders like Eswara Khandre, Jameer Ahmed etc who are also willing to be CM. I think JDS will gain more seats and will join with AAP to form government this time in Karnataka.

Nothing wrong in having internal democracy in the party which is lacking in almost all parties in India... Parameswara is a pragmatic politician with immense experience as a senior cadre... Probably it is time to sacrifice selfishness and strive for victory first....
