Udupi: 2013 jewellery dacoity case – Accused sentenced to seven years RI

Udupi, Feb 18: Second additional district and sessions court, Karkala mobile court sentenced two accused in jewellery dacoity case that occurred 10 years ago at Karkala to seven years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI).

Madhukara Acharya (36), resident of Karkala Varanga Bandimatt and Prashant Acharya (36), resident of Kumbashi of Kundapur are the accused convicted by the court.

There are six accused in this case. Shahid Ali and Chandra Acharya were acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence. Two more accused Mohan Mogaveera and Sandeep Mogaveera died during the trial.

On September 17, 2013, the accused barged into the jewellery shop owned by Ramachandra Mane and sprayed chili powder to his eyes and looted 1.5 kg gold worth Rs 42.67 lac.

Accused Madhukara was arrested on the same day. The other five who managed to escape from the car were arrested in due course and all golden ornaments were recovered from them.

The then circle inspector of Karkala, G M Naika filed chargesheet in the court. Justice Dinesh Hegde sentenced the accused to seven years RI. Public prosecutor Jayaram Shetty argued for the prosecution.
