Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia (MS)

Sullia, Mar 4: Two farm workers have been arrested for attempted murder and robbery at the home of the farm's owner in Karikkala, Pambethadi village on March 2. The accused, identified as Varadaraj (30) and Saijan P P (38), were daily wage laborers at Vishwanath's farm for the past four months and lived in a shed near the house.

According to reports, the accused took Rs 200 each and claimed they were going to Panja market. They returned late in the evening and climbed to the upper story of the house at around 9.30 pm. Varadaraj held Gayatri (61), the wife of the owner Vishwanath, by the neck and demanded gold and cash, while Saijan held her legs. When Gayatri screamed, neighbors Suresh and Prema rushed to her rescue, but Varadraj managed to stab her neck twice. She was treated at Kadaba government hospital.

Gayatri and her husband Vishwanath lived together, but Vishwanath cannot walk. The accused were reportedly aware of this and planned to murder Gayatri and loot the gold and cash in the house. The Subramanya police have arrested the accused, with Varadaraj hailing from Chitradurga and Saijan from Dharmasthala. Further investigation is ongoing.

It's very difficult to gauge what runs in somebody's mind especially after seeing the economic status and vulnerability of the couple even though the accused might have had a clean past! However, there are compelling socioeconomic reasons for the dramatic increase in daring robberies, read::“Societies that empathically attend to the needs of their more vulnerable members are societies that are good for everyone. Data now shows that when empathy levels fall in a society, violence increases, economic inequality increases, instability infiltrates the social institutions, health conditions worsen, and educational systems are short-changed…Individual wellbeing and communal stability suffer under conditions of low empathy and significant economic inequality"!!
