Ajit Jogi's Son Airlifted to Delhi after Mob Attack

Raipur, June 24 (IANS) A special plane airlifted Amit Jogi, son of Congress leader Ajit Jogi, Friday from Jabalpur to New Delhi after he sustained serious injuries in a mob attack in Madhya Pradesh Thursday night, family sources said.

"His condition is stable, but he has lost sight from one eye as a blood clot was found in his right eye. He has received injuries on his ear and other places as well," sources close to his family told IANS, citing doctors at the New Delhi's All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he was airlifted from Jabalpur.

The 33-year-old Jogi junior was attacked when he was going in a vehicle in a village, some 40-50 km away from Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur town between 11 p.m. and midnight Thursday. He was initially admitted to a private hospital at Jabalpur.

The junior Jogi told his parents Friday that a mob, mainly of youths armed with iron rods and sticks, torched a vehicle carrying him, his personal security officer and two, three Youth Congress friends from Chhattisgarh.

The attackers, about 200 in number, hit him on the head with a rod and one of his close aides Sandeep Sahu also sustained multiple injuries.

Raipur-based Amit, the lone son of the wheelchair-bound former Chhattisgarh chief minister, was in Madhya Pradesh to campaign for the Congress nominee Dr. Tanya Solomon, a close relative, in the Jabera assembly by-poll. The Jabera seat in Damoh district goes to polls Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Chhattisgarh unit of the Congress said that "the near fatal attack on Ajit Jogi's son was a well planned conspiracy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and people of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are well aware of the criminal nature of the BJP,".

In a statement, the party has appealed to the Election Commission to "take note of the incident that has brought slur for democracy and punish those who carried out the attack.".
